Day 4 – Obidos

For a change of pace, the next day we took a side trip to the quaint and colorful town of Obidos. This charming Portuguese walled town with narrow cobbled streets, traditional painted houses and medieval castle, is a perfect destination to immerse yourself in Portugal’s history. The white washed houses and gnarly plein trees screamed that they needed an artist to try and capture their beauty and uniqueness.

Day 3 – Afternoon Location: Sintra and the National Palace

Next up on the itinerary our group visited the last main Sintra attractions, the National Palace and the sweet town of Sintra itself. So many beautiful palaces, so little time! Here you can see some of the colorful exteriors hugging the cliffside as the village bustles with activity below.

After a full day, we then headed back to Cascais for a little downtime at our hotel and another delicious Portuguese dinner.

Day 3 – Sintra: Peña Palace

Since Sintra is filled with so many beautiful palaces and castles, one day is not enough time to absorb it all, so we returned the next day to continue exploring everything it has to offer. First stop was its star attraction, Peña Palace, which dazzles with bright colors and fairytale design. While our photographers and tourists explored the interior and its surroundings, us painters set out to paint its dramatic, red and yellow facade.

Day 2 – Afternoon Location – Sintra: Monseratte

That afternoon we headed to another amazing palace, Monserrate.  It is a visually striking blend of Arabic, gothic and Indian influences, and once again is surrounded by beautiful, lush, exotic vegetation. While most everyone explored the palace’s interior, I set up outside to capture its distinct architecture.

After finishing our tour in Sintra, we headed back to Cascais for a little downtime and an amazing dinner. The perfect ending to an adventure filled day!

Day 1 – Sintra
On our first full day of our Portugal Art Trek, we hit the ground running by visiting the fairy tale town of Sintra filled with exotic gardens, palaces and castles. First stop was La Quinta de Regaleira, decorated in an ornate facade and surrounded by enchanting gardens filled with gothic turrets, carved gargoyles and hidden tunnels. We chose this view grand view of the gardens with one of the palaces in the backgrounds and began capturing our first painting of the trip. It was a truly magical setting!

Loaded with thick, textured paint over multiple layers of color, these Texas wildflowers are bursting to life with dimension and energy. Whimsical blooms seem to dance in nature’s kaleidoscope of spring hues bringing joy and sunshine to everyone they greet.

This piece looks great hung individually or paired with a complimentary bluebonnet landscape in the series. Please e-mail Niki Gulley for options and details.

New Abstracted Iris Painting by Texas Artist Niki Gulley

“Joyful Interlude” ©2024 Niki Gulley
30″ x 30″ Textured Acrylic on Canvas

My irises last year were so beautiful and prolific. Whenever I gazed at them, I experienced so much joy, that I felt compelled to capture that feeling on canvas. My goal was to create pieces that are full of energy, texture and light. Painting the flowers larger than life and adding layers and layers of paint to build up texture, the cheerful blooms come to life and dance across the canvas.

New Texas Bluebonnet Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

I am so ready for spring! I keep dreaming about the bumper crop of bluebonnets the forecasters are predicting this year. But why wait? That is the beauty of being an artist. I can bring us the glee of springtime right now. Painting these Texas wildflowers larger than life, I wanted them to leap off the canvas, bringing joy and energy to your home. I built up so many layers in this one so that there is a richness in depth, a little mystery and various hidden surprises so that every time you gaze at it you see something new. Happy spring!

New “Symphonic Expressions” Large Abstract Texas Painting by Niki Gulley

“Symphonic Expressions” ©2024 Niki Gulley
48″ x 60″ textured acrylic painting on wrap around canvas

My labor of love this past month! With the canvas as wide as I am tall, and so many ups and downs my step ladder painting it, this one was quite the workout. But, it was important for me to completely immerse you in the energy found amongst nature. This painting is best seen in person so that you can step into this life-size canvas and feel our Texas’ landscape’s beauty yourself.

I made sure to not over blend my thick strokes so that you could see the marks and feel the vivacity found in nature. Repeating patterns and waves of color create a harmony within the painting. Rendering the bluebonnets and wildflowers along with their surroundings abstractly plays with taking a traditional subject matter and putting a new twist on it. Voluminous and dramatic clouds surround your journey into this uplifting symphonic expression of peace and hope.
