“Sunday Drive II,” Texas Hill Country ©2023 Niki Gulley

16″ x 20″ textured acrylic painting on canvas

This idyllic setting just screamed Texas to me and I had to paint it. The quintessential windmill spins in the distance, signaling a change in seasons as spring arrives. Colorful bluebonnets and wildflowers fill the landscape, inviting you to take a leisurely drive through the wildflower fields, noble oaks and into the hilltops ahead. I hope you can slow down and enjoy your journey in the Texas Hill Country on this beautiful April day.

16″ x 20″ textured acrylic painting on canvas

Who doesn’t love a drive through the Texas Hill Country on a beautiful Sunday afternoon? Especially in springtime when the bluebonnets and wildflowers form a rolling carpet of cheerful color! Today we had to stop ont he side of the road for me to capture all of that beauty. Big, fluffy clouds drift by in the sky as those gently rolling shapes repeat in the trees and foreground adding to a harmonious, joyful feel. I hope you can enjoy the escape with me!

Painting in the Texas Hill Country with Impressionist Niki Gulley

“Living History III” ©2023 Niki Gulley
24″ x 12″ textured acrylic painting on canvas

“For me, wildflowers are joy-giving. They have enriched my life and fed my soul and given beautiful memories to sustain me.”
– Lady Bird Johnson

Surrounded by a sea of blue – Scott captured me in my element here! Not only were the bluebonnets and wildflowers magnificent this year, but I just adore the live oaks, too. Their massive stature, their gnarly, twisting branches and the umbrella of shade they cast, just make me want to paint them over and over again. Leaving bluebonnets large and prominent in the foreground, rows and rows of cobalt lift your spirits and lead you back to the shelter of the grand old oak. I hope you, too, can enjoy the beauty of Texas in all of its spring glory.

Textured Bluebonnet Painting by Dallas Artist Niki Gulley

“Harvesting Color” ©2023 Niki Gulley
24″ x 12″ Textured Acrylic on Canvas

Recently we drove all over the Texas Hill Country, taking in the beauty of this year’s gorgeous wildflower crop! I’ve always loved this old stone farmhouse in Marble Falls, so today we just had to stop so I?could paint it and the flower fantasy surrounding it. Besides a prolific year for bluebonnets, the white poppies were denser than I’d ever seen. Painting them large in the foreground, allows you to take in their individual beauty. Arranging the rows of wildflowers veritcally are designed to lift your spirits and guide you to your retreat in the distance. May you enjoy your escape to the beautiful hill country!

Texas Artist Niki Gulley Paints “Living History”

20″ x 10″ Textured Acrylic on Canvas

I am fascinated by our Texas live oaks. Their gnarly, tangled branches are unlike other trees and tell such a story of their life – twists, turns and all. Standing tall and branching wide, they offer shelter and respite from the hot Texas sun and grow where few other sentinels can survive such drought conditions. Their deep, etched bark gave me the perfect opportunity to play with color and texture – a modern take on Van Gogh!

“Barn at LBJ Ranch” Oil Painting by Texas Artist Niki Gulley

“Barn at LBJ Ranch”  ©2022 Niki Gulley •  9″ x 12″ palette knife oil painting

I created this while on a painting competition for the American Impressionists Society which was held in Fredericksburg, TX this spring. We were open to painting anything that we would like and I ran across this beautiful red barn nestled in amongst the massive, gnarly trees on the LBJ Ranch and just couldn’t resist painting it.

“Purple Shadows” from the Willow City Loop by Niki Gulley

“Purple Shadows”  ©2020 Niki Gulley •  9″ x 12″ palette knife oil painting

Painted on location along the Willow City Loop in Fredericksburg, TX, I was drawn to this tranquil spot, especially as the day was getting hotter. When I started the scene, there were just a few shadows being cast from the trees on the right but they kept growing as I was painting! I liked the rhythm they were creating so I decided to include their patterns and go ahead and chase the light (which is a no no for plein air painters). But there’s always exceptions to the rules, right? I hope you enjoy this cool peaceful place as much as I did.

New Bluebonnet and Indian Paintbrush Painting

“Spring’s Glory, Texas Hill Country” ©2012 Niki Gulley
48″ x 30″ textured painting on wrap around canvas

was inspired by a recent trip to the Texas Hill Country. This spring conditions were perfect, and the bluebonnets were amazing! While we were near Fredericksburg, we took a scenic drive along the Willow City Look and as we approached the top of a hill about half way around, we were greeted by this gorgeous view of the rolling hills and bluebonnets and Indian Paintbrush in full bloom. Then, to top it off the sun was setting in the distance casting its golden glow and backlighting the wildflowers. I had to capture the magical moment, enhancing the kaleidoscope of colors in the sky and along the ground. Arranging clouds, the road and rows of bluebonnets in rhythmic sweeping shapes, create a harmonious landscape that flows with light, texture and color, and suggest a feeling of optimism about what’s to come.
If you’re in the Dallas this weekend and would like to see more of my Texas bluebonnet and wildflower paintings, please stop by my booth at Richardson’s Cottonwood Art Festival where I will be exhibiting these along with more of my contemporary landscape paintings.
