I created this while on a painting competition for the American Impressionists Society which was held in Fredericksburg, TX this spring. We were open to painting anything that we would like and I ran across this beautiful red barn nestled in amongst the massive, gnarly trees on the LBJ Ranch and just couldn’t resist painting it.

“Fibonacci’s Dream” Abstract Aspen Painting by Niki Gulley

on 1.5″ wrap around canvas with the painting continuing around the edges

In this painting I wanted you to feel that child-like wonder of staring up into the treetops, mesmerized by the scene overhead. I chose uplifting yellows and golds contrasted against a turquoise blue sky with gentle clouds drifting by to lift your spirits. I’ve arranged the aspens in a spiral pattern so that you have a sense of laying on the ground, surrounded by the forest, connecting with nature and the heavens above.

Utilizing thick, curving paint strokes also adds to that joyful, playful feeling of hope and discovery.

I find being immersed in nature can have such an uplifting effect, and I wanted to share that feeling with you in Woodland Adventure. I chose pure, intense reds and yellows contrasted against autumn greens to create a fall forest that vibrates with color and energy. I placed the vivid foliage in diagonal sweeping shapes to create a sense of movement, so that you can feel the wind gently rustling the leaves and causing them to dance on a beautiful fall day.

This sunflower field that I visited this summer was GORGEOUS. It felt like it stretched for miles. Bright, happy faces sharing their smiles with us and lifting our spirits. My heart literally swelled and I had to capture all of that joy on canvas. Utilizing vivid, uplifting hues, thick paint and bold, loose strokes add to the happy, carefree feeling of the moment and I hope you are transported there with me.

I was awestruck by these massive fields of sunflowers blooming not too far away from where I live. Seeing this brilliant carpet of gold, with its sea of faces smiling towards the sun, just made me feel happy and I wanted you to experience that joy, too. Created with palette knife and thick paint, these yellow beauties practically leap off the canvas and come to life!

“Happy Campers” Oil Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

Painted on location, I loved these colorful campers we came across at this “glamping” park, and I?just had to capture the scene. Their owners seemed to be haivng so much fun and they took such pride in their mobile homes and the way they had decorated them, that a couple even gave us tours of the insides. They were inspiring!
