Commissioned Quadriptych Palette Knife Oil Painting by Niki Gulley

SOLD • Four 28″ x 28″ canvases to form a 56″ x 56″ quadriptych • textured mixed media painting

This year I was honored to have my collectors reach out to me and ask me to create a special painting for them on commission. For several years they had been enjoying a 72″ quadriptych painting of mine. They loved how it brought them such joy and the feeling of being surrounded by the forest. But, when they decided to build a new home, my original painting was too large to fit over the fireplace in their great room. So, they decided to hang the first painting in another room and requested that I paint this new one smaller and to change the scene so that it would reflect the fall trees that grow around their new house. Voila! I hope you, too, can experience the joy of being surrounded by nature’s beauty in this autumn kaleidoscope of colors.

A gorgeous spring day in Texas, with the bluebonnets, Indian Paintbrush and Texas wildflowers in full bloom, and just a few white fluffy clouds in the sky. This Texas hill country scene is painted with extremely thick paint and palette knives so that in person, the canvas is loaded with texture, color and movement. I wanted to capture the rhythm, color, and joy of prolific poppies flowing along this blossoming hillside. Set beneath a colorful sky with a few clouds drifting by on a beautiful day in springtime, wildflowers are in full bloom. Making sure to not over blend my thick strokes so that you could see the marks and feel the energy found in nature, Blossoming Joy is loaded with texture, vibrant hues and movement. Vertical diagonal rows of ruby jewel tones lead your eye into the distance, inviting you to stroll amongst the gorgeous tapestry. This Arboreal Labyrinth series was such a joy to paint! My goal was to capture the excitement and energy I feel while being immersed in the forest. Relishing in the gorgeous fall colors, enjoying the cool breeze as it kisses my cheek and creates a beautiful symphony blowing through the autumn leaves, and admiring the texture of peeling, knotted aspen trees, I stroll through the woods and forget about anything else but being surrounded by mother nature’s beauty.

“Bundle of Sunshine” Sunflower Palette Knife Painting by Niki Gulley

I was awestruck by these massive fields of sunflowers blooming in Provence. Seeing this brilliant carpet of gold, with its sea of faces smiling towards the sun, just made me feel happy and I wanted you to experience that joy, too. Exaggerating the tile-roofed house in the distance also adds to that cheerful, whimsical mood of feeling content and like you’ve found your home. Created with palette knife and oil paint, “Bundle of Sunshine” practically leaps off the canvas and comes to life with its vibrant yellow petals and extremely thick three-dimensional oil paint.

I absolutely love it when I come across a whole field of wildflowers – there is something about the transformation of a single dainty flower into a dense explosion of color that inspires awe and delights your senses. I liked how these rows of poppies and rolling grasses created a gentle harmony, inviting you to wander into the distance, getting lost in the moment. I feel like they had a story to tell, and I needed to capture their enduring presence by making them the focus of my painting. Purposely choosing this elongated canvas gives their trunks and limbs plenty of room to express their legacy and emphasize their majesty. Exciting pops of color, energetic strokes and a touch of whimsy add to the joy of these ancestral beauties.

“Sun’s Bounty III” Palette Knife Oil Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

Sun’s Bounty is inspired from the beautiful sunflower fields we visited in Provence, France. The flowers seemed to stretch forever and the color explosion was out of this world! Back in my studio, I worked from a combination of photos, on-site sketches and memories. Painting the sunflowers full-sized in the foreground helps to bring them to life and hopefully transport you to this happy location. Including surprising pops of vivid reds and purples keeps your eye moving throughout the scene, seeing new things each time you look at it, and adds to the joyful feeling.
