“Reflective Radiance” textured oil painting of Monet’s Garden by Niki Gulley

SOLD • “Reflective Radiance” ©2018 Niki Gulley
Two 48″ x 18″ canvases with one 48″ x 30″ canvas in the middle to form a 48″ x 66″ triptych
Textured oil painting on wrap around canvas

Just Sold! I decided it would be a fun challenge to create an extremely large painting, and I wanted the final piece to be very uplifting, colorful and full of energy. Opting for warm colors and working with extremely thick paint and palette knives, I chose this lily pond reference from our visit to Monet’s Gardens in Giverny, France. The grounds were breathtaking and I could actually see his paintings come to life. I was drawn to the energetic flow and yet calming serenity in this view, and I positioned the water lilies and my paint strokes in a curving pattern to add to that mood. The morning light peeking through the distant foliage added to a sense of mystery and promise that I wanted to capture in paint, and share with you that feeling of hope.

New Monet’s Water Lilies Oil Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

48″ x 48″ Textured Oil Painting, Monet’s Garden ©2013 Niki Gulley • SOLD
Just Shipped – For this commissioned painting, my collectors fell in love with my water lily paintings, but I didn’t have a size canvas that would work for their living room, so they asked me to create a custom piece that was 48″ x 48″. Using thick textured oil paint and palette knives, this water lily pond inspired from our travels to Monet’s Garden, is filled with color, movement, energy and dimension.

Day 2, Cinque Terre Art Trek with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams

Day 2, Riomaggiore: CINQUE TERRE / LAKE COMO ART TREK
Plein Air Painting and Photography Workshop with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams

On the second day of our plein-air painting and photography workshop in Cinque Terre, Italy, the sun was shining and we rode the train to the southern-most city of Riomaggiore. Setting up our easels right near the water, we enjoyed the cathartic sounds of the waves crashing against the rocky shore as we painted. I chose this view looking back at the intricate puzzle of stacked houses lining the hills while some of my students chose to paint the rocky cliffs and ocean surf. While I couldn’t quite finish this piece before our morning light disappeared, you can see my progress below.

Plein-Air Painting at Versailles with Niki Gulley

Versailles5″ x 7″ pastel by Niki Gulley
Day 5, Afternoon – Art Trek Paris with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams
Thoroughly enjoying the sunshine and this peaceful hidden garden, we scoped out another view and tried to capture more of the sense of being in France in our next sketch. Manicured, organized, and adorned with statues and urns as focal points, this vantage communicated the idea of the French formal garden that I was looking for. At the end of the day, the French groundsman was kind enough to offer us pastel artists fixative for our drawings! That definitely breaks the misconception we have of the French not being friendly! A perfect ending to a perfect day.

Plein Air Painting Workshops in the Greek Isles

“Walking on Water” © 2010 Niki Gulley
Oil painting • 12” x 9”

The crystal-clear turquoise and cobalt waters in Greece are an endless source of inspiration. I felt liked we’d stepped right into the set of Mama Mia and Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants! It’s hard to believe someplace so beautiful actually exists. We can’t wait to take painters and photographers with us on next year’s workshop to share in the beauty and serenity of the Greek Isles.
