Day 5, Florence – Tuscany Art Trek
After a leisurely day near our villa, we picked up the pace the next day and ventured into the bustling city of Florence, birthplace of the Renaissance. Highlights from the day include gazing at Michelangelo’s David, visiting the Uffizi Gallery with all of its famous Renaissance paintings, marveling at the marble Duomo and baptistry, wandering the streets in search of leather goods and momentos, and dining al Fresco to cap off the day.
If you’d like to join us for next year’s Art Trek to Venice in February, Greece in May, Tuscany in September or Cinque Terre / Lake Como in September, please visit NikiGulley.com/Artreks for more information. Workshops fill up quickly, so please let us know if you are interested. Registration deadlines for some of the trips are less than a month away!

Nightfall III, Chicago pastel

In contrast to the ghost town downtown Dallas can sometimes be at night, I love the energy pulsing through downtown Chicago, especially near Michigan Avenue. Besides the excitement in all of the activity, I like how everything is illuminated and the way the lights sparkle. In Nightfall III, I wanted to contrast the deep purple I saw in the John Hancock building against the glowing Water Tower in front of it, and am pleased with the dreamy effect.

Nightfall II, Chicago pastel

I wanted to paint a Chicago landmark in a unique way, so I chose this photo of mine to work from of Buckingham Fountain at night. I love how the lights after dark create a dreamy, romantic feel to most scenes, especially when reflecting on water. I remember hearing the symphony in the background synchronizing with the lights on the fountain and creating such a magical night.
