I wanted this painting to be about the power and energy in nature to invigorate your spirit, so I chose to use warm vivid colors contrasted against cool underbrush while utilizing thick staccato strokes to add to that feeling. I placed the fall foliage in curving sweeping shapes to create a sense of movement, so that you can feel the wind gently rustling the leaves and causing them to dance on a beautiful fall day.

Winter Aspen Tree Palette Knife Painting by Niki Gulley
Growing up in the midwest, I loved the first snowfall of the year when everything would get a beautiful dusting of pristine white powder, including even the tiniest of branches in the treetops above. If you caught that moment early enough in the morning before anything had disturbed the intricate frosted web, it was just magical. Then the sun would start rising and peeking through the limbs, and everything would sparkle like diamonds. In Climbing Trees, I wanted to capture that beautiful moment when the sunlight dances through the icing on the treetops and you can feel yourself looking up in wonderment just like you did when you were a kid.
New “Interplay” Palette Knife Aspen Tree Painting by Niki Gulley
Flickering autumn leaves seem to almost dance in a gentle breeze. I wanted this scene to be filled with movement and energy, so I incorporated a lot of diagonal and curving shapes in the design to suggest that feeling. Contrasting short staccato strokes against blended passages with my palette knives, also increase that sense of motion. I hope you, too, can feel the excitement of walking through the woods on a beautiful fall day, letting your cares slip away and your spirit being invigorated.

New “Dreams Ahead” Palette Knife Aspen Tree Painting by Niki Gulley
Enjoying the melodic tinkling of the aspen leaves rustling in the breeze, the trickling sounds of the babbling brook at our backs, and the beauty of fall ablaze with color, I felt invigorated as I began painting this aspen forest. The setting was so peaceful and rejuvenating that I wanted to communicate that joyful feeling of discovery. Filling the canvas with energetic staccato strokes and bold colors, in addition to gently arching the tree trunks reaching towards the sky, add to that uplifting feeling. And then just a sliver of the trail cutting through the forest, suggests the excitement of the journey that is to come.

“15 mph” New Textured Palette Knife oil painting by Texas Artist Niki Gulley
This painting is inspired from our trip to Santa Fe last summer. We were driving on the high road to Taos and we kept going over these steep hills where you couldn’t see what was coming next. I loved the graphic simplicity of the views with only a sliver of the land in front of us, the vast expanse of sky with its billowing dramatic clouds, and the one lone speed limit sign warning you about the tight curves ahead. Arranging all of the elements so that they converge in the distance and create a sense of motion with curving thick paint strokes, 15 mph beckons you to motor forward and discover what is over the next bend.
