New Palette Knife Painting from the Dallas Arboretum by Texas Artist Niki Gulley

24″ x 12″ textured oil painting on wrap around canvas, Dallas Arboretum
©2016 Niki Gulley

I painted this scene from the Dallas Arboretum on location a few weeks ago when the weather was beautiful and the spring buds were in full bloom. I love tulips being one of the first flowers to announce that winter has officially ended, so I focused on these colorful red and white striped ones in the foreground, which contrast so well against the complimentary green leaves and grasses. I also liked how their height leads you back into the distant flower beds and onto the Degolyer house in the background, so I chose this vertical panorama format to accentuate that feeling. Loaded with thick oil paint, texture and movement, I hope you can feel the joy that spring is in the air!

If you’re in the DFW next weekend and you’d like to see more of my textured landscape oil paintings, please stop by my display at the Dallas Arboretum’s Artscape.

New Turtle Creek Azalea Painting by Texas Artist Niki Gulley

24″ x 12″ textured oil painting on wrap around canvas, Turtle Creek
©2016 Niki Gulley

Painted on location a couple of weeks ago, I set up my easel in front of these prolific azalea bushes along Turtle Creek. The vibrant pinks and fuchsia were so full of life set against the cool green leaves, that I wanted to capture not only that vivid spring color but also the elegant sycamore tree in the distance with its speckled white bark.  Contrasting the height of the vertical tree against the horizontal blooms, I chose this vertical panoramic canvas, and repeating shapes throughout creates a harmony to the overall scene. Painted with palette knife and lots of texture, I hope you can feel the beauty and energy of a spring day in Texas.

If you’re in the DFW area next weekend and you’d like to see more of my textured landscape oil paintings, please stop by my display at the Dallas Arboretum’s Artscape.

SOLD • 30″ x 48″ textured oil pai. on wrap around canvas

Just Sold through the Good Art Company Gallery! Inspired by a trip to the Texas Hill Country, we were greeted by this gorgeous view of the rolling landscape and wildflowers in full bloom. Then, to top it off the sun was setting in the distance casting its golden glow and backlighting the wildflowers. I had to capture the magical moment, enhancing the kaleidoscope of colors in the sky and along the ground. Arranging clouds, the road and rows of bluebonnets in rhythmic sweeping shapes create a harmonious scene that flows with light, texture and color.

“Hill Country Retreat” ©2016 Niki Gulley
9″ x 12″ textured oil painting

I painted these Texas bluebonnets at a plein air painting workshop I was leading in Fredericksburg, TX. I loved the pop of red on the flag flying off this cabin’s back porch in contrast to the vibrant cobalt bluebonnets. Working with palette knife and thick oil paint, this Texas landscape is loaded with texture, color and movement!

New “April’s Bounty” Palette Knife Oil Painting by Texas Artist Niki Gulley

“April’s Bounty”  ©2016 Niki Gulley
24″ x 36″ textured oil painting on wrap around canvas

Inspired by a trip to the hill country, I wanted you to feel the warmth and beauty on this perfect spring day. Painted with thick oil paint and palette knives to achieve extreme texture, the resulting image comes to life and is loaded with color, movement and energy. Using thick oil paint and palette knives, I arranged the bluebonnets and Indian Paintbrush diagnonally to create energy and movement, keeping your eye traveling from blossom to blossom. Choosing soft golds and violets for the background creates contrast against the foreground grasses and adds a warmth to the overall scene so that you feel the joy and serenity of being immersed in the Texas hill country.

In this painting, I wanted you to you to experience the joy of looking up into the treetops – just like you did when you were a kid. Lying on the ground, not a care in the world, you gaze in wonderment as the clouds drift by. Choosing playful colors and thick chunky staccato strokes add to that childlike whimsy and I hope you are transported back to a happy, carefree time and place.
