What a treat to find this little guy taking a break on these elephant ears at the Dallas Arboretum. The black and orange of this monarch butterfly caught my eye but the curves of the ears led me right to him. Vibrant yellows with a rainbow of colors fill the background.

Spreading their joy across the landscape, I wanted to capture the rhythm, color, and density of beautiful, uplifting wildflowers in bloom. Starting with the first signs of spring when prolific bluebonnets carpet the hills, moving into May as vibrant poppies cast their merriment and energy, and finally transitioning into mid-summer when the amazing aromas of lavender fill the air. Inspired by this gorgeous aspen grove, I wanted to capture the magical morning light casting its warm glow on the forest. Peaceful and mysterious, the sun’s rays peek through the knotted trunks causing the landscape to dance with light and awaken with autumn’s kaleidoscope of colors. Autumn Aspen Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

I loved this brilliant aspen forest with its bright white aspen trunks slicing through all of the vibrant red and yellow foliage. The patterns of the trees created a sort of rhythm and I focused on the placement of the ivory sentinels, the diagonal purple shadows that they cast and the rustling of the leaves to add to that musical feeling. I hope you, too, can sense the energy and joy of being surrounded by nature as autumn is in full swing.

In this painting I wanted you to feel that child-like wonder of staring up in into the treetops and heavens above. Choosing uplifting autumn tones contrasted against a turquoise blue sky, gentle clouds drift by as the sun peeks through casting its magical light on everything it touches and lifting your spirits. Arranging the trees in a circular pattern gives you a sense of laying on the ground, surrounded by the forest and directs your eye to hope’s focal point. Bordering on the edge of abstraction and the cusp of realism, Knot in the Woods is loaded with layers of paint, built up with thin glazes and then palette knife to create extreme dimension. Choosing to come in tight on the subject, I played around with various strokes and paint thicknesses to add depth and dimension. Splashes of gold and pops of fire-engine red add excitement and energy to the expansive aspen forest.
