Daily Painting #39

“Seasonal Changes” #7 ©2020 Niki Gulley
12″ x 12″ Textured Acrylic Painting on 1.5″ Stretched Canvas
Painting continues around the edges so that it can be hung without a frame.

Being in the woods always seems to open the flood gates on my creativity and hopefully my love of nature gets conveyed into my paintings.

New “Elevated Love” Aspen Tree Painting by Niki Gulley

“Elevated Love” ©2020 Niki Gulley

48″ x 36” textured oil painting on wrap around canvas
Recently I felt compelled to paint a new treetop painting where a couple has etched a heart into the aspen bark. With romance in the air and the excitement of young love, this painting is full of playful colors and energy to match those emotions.

New “Autumn Serenade” Palette Knife Fall Foliage Painting by Niki Gulley

“Autumn Serenade”  ©2020 Niki Gulley
36″ x 48″ textured oil painting on wrap around canvas
Shimmering colors of autumn: Aspen, Oak and the forest of trees quiver, their light graceful leaves tremble and quake, silver and gold, scarlet and tangerine, with each light breeze. There is the quiet energy of change coming and vibrant color charges the woods. Crisp fall mountain air, slender trunks cut bright strokes of white against a dazzling kaleidoscope of colors. Staccato strokes and shimmering hues add to the feeling of change in the air and suggest the breeze whistling through the foliage.

“Pedestal to the Sky” from Athens Greece by Niki Gulley

Day 1, Greece Art Trek:  The Acropolis, Athens
9″ x 12″ oil painting by Niki Gulley

On the first full day of our plein air painting and photography workshop in Greece, we visited the Acropolis in Athens along with several other ancient sites. It was truly awe inspiring to see a part of history from the fifth century BC and to imagine what life must have been like as democracy was beginning. In the afternoon, the painters set up their easels on top of the beautiful balcony at our hotel to paint this beautiful view of the Parthenon while the photographers continued touring the city. In this oil painting, I wanted to capture a sense of scale with the Acropolis, and suggest how it rises above the city on this massive mound, towering majestically over the city, kissed by the clouds above.

Breakfast from the terrace of our hotel. What a view of the Acropolis!

New “Freedom II” Palette Knife Oil Painting by Niki Gulley

“Freedom II” ©2019 Niki Gulley
SOLD • 20″ x 30″ textured oil painting

Just Delivered! I was recently asked to create this whimsical girl on the swing for a commission by someone who had scene a similar painting of a little boy that I had painted hanging in one of my collector’s homes. I was so thrilled to paint this for her! Filled with joy and movement, I hope “Freedom II” captures the spirit of swinging from sturdy branches on a lazy summer day. Using swirling shapes and strokes, in addition to the circular composition, all help to create the energy of the moment while fun pops of color add to the excitement. Life-size bare feet swing toward you adding to the fun of the moment. Set against rolling hills with home in the distance, you can fly high and soar on a dream. For more information on my contemporary impressionistic palette knife paintings, please e-mail Niki Gulley.

New “Gondola Ride” Oil Painting by Palette Knife Painter Niki Gulley

“Gondola Ride,” Venice ©2019 Niki Gulley
12″ x 9″ oil painting

I painted this piece on location during our Art Trek we taught in Venice while their infamous Carnival celebration was taking place. Since St. Mark’s Square can get overrun with tourists, we chose to set up our easels along a side street to enjoy the peacefulness and beauty of the city. I love the magical light that comes flooding in through the canals and is so distinctive of Venice. The stone bridge with its iron railing sets a perfect backdrop to the gondolier rowing his enchanted passengers through the romantic back canals.

New “Sunrise in St. Mark’s Square” Oil Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

“Sunrise in St. Mark’s Square” Venice ©2019 Niki Gulley
12″ x 16″ textured oil painting
I painted this piece on location in Venice during our Art Trek we taught in Venice while their infamous Carnival celebration was taking place. Since St. Mark’s Square can get overrun with tourists, we chose to get up with sunrise to enjoy the beauty of the city and the peacefulness of those early morning hours. I love the magical light that comes flooding in from the lagoon and is so distinctive of Venice. Fortunately, I got set up in time to capture the glow from the gas lamps, too, before they went out as daylight approached, adding to the mysterious quality of the plaza. Against a backdrop of the Doge’s Palace, a few people stroll across the square and signal the energy of the day that is to come.

“Twisted Roots” Palette Knife Oil Painting by Dallas Artist Niki Gulley

“Twisted Roots” ©2018 Niki Gulley
16″ x 20” textured oil on canvas

Painted on location, I was drawn to this magnificent Magnolia tree with its massive tangle of gnarly roots. Gripping the water’s edge, it anchors the foreground and leads you down the meandering creek where morning light shimmers across its surface. Adding unexpected pops of color, I wanted this painting to be full of joy while giving you a sense of peace in this protected oasis.

“Marching into Autumn II” Palette Knife Aspen Tree Painting by Niki Gulley

“Marching into Autumn II” ©2019 Niki Gulley
12″ x 24″ textured oil on canvas

I loved this brilliant aspen forest with its bright white aspen trunks slicing through all of the vibrant red and yellow foliage, contrasted against the multitude of greens surrounding it. The patterns of the trees created a sort of rhythm and I focused on the placement of the ivory sentinels and strokes in the leaves to add to that feeling of a driving beat. I hope you, too, can feel the energy and joy of being surrounded by nature as autumn is in full swing.
