“Daybreak” pastel by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

“Daybreak” ©2014 Niki Gulley
pastel • 16″ x 40″
Whenever I can actually wake up by dawn, I am always inspired by the magical light that casts its glow across the horizon and am rewarded by the peacefulness before humanity starts stirring. In Daybreak, I wanted to capture that magical morning light and the quiet mysterious mood created from the sun’s rays peeking through the trees, casting their long dramatic shadows and softening the distant landscape.

Art Trek Paris with Niki Gulley & Scott Williams – Day 5

5″ x 7″ pastel by Niki Gulley
Day 5 – Art Trek Paris with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams
Day 5, we took everyone to the Palace of Versailles, 30 minutes outside of Paris. Decadent and opulent doesn’t begin to describe the castle and grounds where Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI bankrupted the country. It is really something to see! After touring the chateau, we staked out a quiet back corner of the gardens away from the tourist masses, and got out our sketchpads. This massive wisteria, the scale of a medium-szed tree caught our eye, and we had to capture its beautiful violet dripping blooms.
Part of our group in front of the Palace of Versailles.

This pastel was inspired by the gorgeous New Mexico rugged terrain, and the pure radiant quality of the sunlight that bathes the region in a glow that makes colors come alive and adds a richness to the surroundings. Santa Fe is one of those places that allows you to witness nature’s staggering beauty amid a setting straight out of the old west.
This is the landscape that inspired Georgia O’keeffe and Ansel Adams, and now it’s your turn. We have the finalized details for our Painting & Photography Workshop in Santa Fe this August, and would love to have you join us!

Nightfall II, Chicago pastel

“Nightfall II,” Chicago ©2010 Niki Gulley
10″ x 8″ pastel
I wanted to paint a Chicago landmark in a unique way, so I chose this photo of mine to work from of Buckingham Fountain at night. I love how the lights after dark create a dreamy, romantic feel to most scenes, especially when reflecting on water. I remember hearing the symphony in the background synchronizing with the lights on the fountain and creating such a magical night.
To purchase this painting, e-mail me at [email protected].
Or, stop by my booth at the Wells Street Art Show in Chicago this weekend to see it in person, chicagoevents.com/event.cfm?eid=141.
