New Contemporary Textured Purple Irises Painting by Niki Gulley

20″ x 30″ Textured Mixed Media on Canvas • ©2021 Niki Gulley

Here you can see the next step in my painting process. I’ve started adding thick layers of paint to bring my purple irises to life. My garden was so beautiful and prolific this year that I felt compelled to capture that beauty on canvas. Taking the ideas that I started in this new series from inside my studio to outside in my backyard, I wanted to create pieces that are full of joy, energy, texture and light.

Painting the blossoms larger than life add to that feeling of hope and exuberance. Choosing to leave the background airy and working with thick layers of white on white paint, ribbons of brightly colored blooms dance across the canvas with spontaneity and freedom. With room to roam, I hope these paintings bring the beauty of nature inside and fill your spirit with light and cheer.

Painting Irises in the Garden by Texas Artist Niki Gulley

20″ x 30″ Textured Mixed Media on Canvas ©2021 Niki Gulley

My irises this year were so beautiful and prolific and added so much joy after the year that we had, that I felt compelled to capture that feeling on canvas. Taking the ideas that I started in this new series from inside my studio to outside in my garden, my goal was to create pieces that are full of joy, energy, texture and light.

Here you can see the first step in my painting process, my charcoal sketch of the irises showing them larger than life. Next I will begin to add layers and layers of paint to build up texture and color so that the cheerful blooms come to life and dance across the canvas.

Recently collectors of mine invited us to stay with them at their beautiful home in San Miguel de Allende in Mexico. I loved all of the gorgeous colors the houses were painted and the tropical lush foliage blooming everywhere.  The rooftop patios were ablaze with vibrant hues, fountains and incredible views of the city sprawling across the horizon. I hope you, too, can enjoy the peace and beauty of relaxing on this oasis in San Miguel.

Recently collectors of mine invited us to stay with them at their beautiful home in San Miguel de Allende in Mexico. I loved all of the gorgeous colors the houses were painted and the tropical lush foliage blooming everywhere.  The bougainvillea was bursting with bountiful blooms in intense pinks inviting you to stop and admire its beauty. Before it was gone, I had to capture this dramatic morning sun that was causing this peach home to glow and the light to dance across the scene in contrast to the deep shadows.

Recently collectors of mine invited us to stay with them at their beautiful home in San Miguel de Allende in Mexico. The grounds were gorgeous! I had to paint this tranquil, lush view of their backyard patio as you can see in the photo above. What a perfect way to spend the morning!

Azure Dreams oil painting

“Azure Dreams” ©2010 Niki Gulley
30” x 40” oil painting

When I painted Azure Dreams, I wanted you to feel like you’d just stepped into a fairytale. Loosely based on the castles and gardens we visited in England, I was awestruck by the size, scope and lushness of their gorgeous gardens – something I can’t achieve in my own wilting backyard in Texas thanks to our heat and drought. So with hope and longing, I painted this idyllic lily pond that you can escape to, enjoy the cool spring air and get lost in the beauty of this tranquil place.

Zen Garden oil painting

“Zen Garden” ©2010 Niki Gulley
10″ x 8″ oil painting
Having grown up in Chicago, this painting is inspired by the Japanese Garden at the Chicago Botanic Gardens since I’ve always loved their grounds ever since I was a little kid. In fact, I painted this piece from a photo I took in high school and have held onto all of these years! I thought it would be fun to paint the scene in thick oil with palette knives. I especially like how the broken color strokes on the water make it look like its surface is shimmering in the sun.
