We had one of those perfect years for bluebonnets, just enough water and the right temperatures to make for a bumper crop of flowers. I traveled down to the hill country earlier this year and out to Ennis just recently in order to capture them in all of their dazzling brilliance. If you’re interested in purchasing this painting and seeing a close up of its thick texture, just follow this link https://www.nikigulley.com/texas-blue-2/.

There is just something inherently beautiful about a rose. The bards write poems about it and musicians compose ballads about them. They signify love and happiness and their aroma always seem to make us smile. Think of how much better the world is when roses are a part of your day. This spring has seen an explosion of color in my garden, so I decided to jump right in and capture it in all of its glory. My roses have been especially vibrant, running the spectrum from pink and reds, to coral and peach, and some yellows with pink edges. Every one presents me with a new opportunity to explore their intricacies and be creative. If you’re interested in purchasing this painting and seeing a close up of its thick texture, just follow this link https://www.nikigulley.com/a-rose-by-any-other-name-2/.

With extra time on my hands from the Corona lock down, I’m planning on bringing back my $100 small textured paintings. It’s been almost 10 years, so I’m excited to finally get back to making these small gems at affordable prices for you! My goal is to create a painting a day priced under $500, with most around $100. And, here is the first one in my new series…After toiling the last couple of years in my garden, it has finally paid dividends. My backyard was bursting with roses this spring and I just couldn’t wait to dive right in and capture their amazing beauty. As each new blossom opens, I am drawn even more to their incredible beauty. These stunning flowers have really inspired me to paint every day

Bountiful Bulbs oil painting

“Bountiful Bulbs” 2010 Niki Gulley
18” x 48” oil on canvas

Sometimes I like to paint places that I dream about and hope to one day experience, as is the case in “Bountiful Bulbs.” The tulip farms that I’ve seen in photos look so magnificent with their perfect vibrant rows of color combined with hearing my friends’ descriptions of seeing the overwhelming explosion of blooms both inspire me to paint a strawberry-and-lemon-lollipop-dipped world where all of your cares melt away.

Poppy Fields Oil Painting at Southlake Art in the Square – this weekend

“What Dreams May Come” ©2010 Niki Gulley
Oil on canvas • 36” x 48”

In this painting I wanted to create a dream-like feel using one of my favorite flowers, the poppy, so I chose to paint this landscape at dusk as the sun is starting to set over the distant hills to add to that mood. I love the wildflower masses in the foreground creating waves of color, and the curving shapes adding to the sense of tranquility. I was mesmerized watching the cinematography in the movie “What Dreams May Come” and my painting reminded me a little of those magical graphics, so I decided to title my piece the same.

I’ll be displaying “What Dreams May Come” and several other new paintings at Southlake’s Art in the Square this weekend. I hope you can stop by and visit. For more information, see artinthesquare.com.

Working from the still life in my studio – I love taking what some folks consider a common wildflower or even a pesky weed, and showing off its lacy beauty.
