“Soaring High” Palette Knife Aspen Tree Painting by Niki Gulley

Soaring High ©2021 Niki Gulley

30″ x 48″ • Textured mixed media on canvas

I wanted this painting to be filled with uplifting colors and energetic strokes all leading you skyward, to soar amongst the clouds. Aspen trees reach towards the heavens while gentle breezes cause the sky to dance while you lay on the ground gazing in wonderment. Happy hues, whimsical shapes and a feeling of movement, hopefully transport you to a carefree childhood moment where all of your worries drift away and dreams are created.

New “Reaching to Heaven” Fall Aspen Impasto Painting by Niki Gulley

Niki Gulley, Dallas, aspen, contemporary impressionist, tree painting

“Reaching to Heaven”
20″ x 16″ textured oil painting on canvas panel

The white bark of these glorious aspens rising towards the sky, reminds me of the columns holding up the roof of a cathedral. With the electric blue sky combined with the vibrant yellow leaves, this is my idea of the heaven that is nature. As such, I want your eye to move upwards pulling the focus skyward with a sense of wonder and whimsy.

New Autumn Aspen Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

“Painted Forest” ©2021 Niki Gulley
18″ x 24″ textured mixed media painting
on 1.5″ wrap around canvas with the painting continuing around the edges
I loved this brilliant aspen forest with its bright white aspen trunks slicing through all of the vibrant red and yellow foliage. The patterns of the trees created a sort of rhythm and I focused on the placement of the ivory sentinels, the diagonal purple shadows that they cast and the rustling of the leaves to add to that musical feeling. I hope you, too, can sense the energy and joy of being surrounded by nature as autumn is in full swing.

Just Sold through Marigold Arts Gallery in Santa Fe! Inspired by the gorgeous aspen groves located in the Sangre de Cristo Mountain rising above Santa Fe, I wanted to capture this magical morning light casting its warm glow on the forest. Peaceful and mysterious, the sun’s rays peek through the knotted trunks causing the landscape to dance with light and awaken with autumn’s kaleidoscope of colors. Loaded with texture and layers and layers of paint, the forest shimmers with hope and discovery for the new day.

New “Three’s Company” Aspen Painting by Palette Knife Artist Niki Gulley

“Three’s Company” ©2021 Niki Gulley

20″ x 16″ textured oil painting on canvas panel

This summer we visited Santa Fe and to escape the heat we ventured up the Santo de Cristo mountains to cool down amongst the beautiful, refreshing aspen trees. In this painting I wanted you to feel that child-like wonder of staring up in into the treetops and the heavens above. Choosing calming greens against a lavender-blue peaceful sky and arranging the aspens so that they meet in the middle, suggests a feeling of togetherness. While organizing the outlying trees and mesmerizing clouds in a circular pattern and using thick, curving brushstrokes, creates a joyful, playful mood.

“Reclining Thoughts” ©2021 Niki Gulley
40″ x 30” textured oil painting on wrap around canvas
In this painting, I wanted you to you to experience the joy of looking up into the treetops – just like you did when you were a kid. Lying on the ground, not a care in the world, you gaze in wonderment as the clouds drift by. Choosing warm yellows, reds and greens and utilizing thick chunky staccato strokes add to that childlike whimsy and I hope you are transported back to a happy, carefree time and place.

Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley Painting Aspen Trees in Santa Fe, NM

12″ x 24″ textured mixed media painting on canvas

When we visited Santa Fe this month, the temperature started rising as the weekend went on, so we headed up into the mountains for cooler breezes to paint the beautiful aspen trees. I was attracted to the white trunks with their unique peeling bark and dark protruding knots. I liked how the dramatic dappled light came through the trees and illuminated the grasses and foliage causing the landscape to glow. Becoming totally lost in the moment, I set out to capture the peacefulness and contentment I felt that day.
