“Reclining Thoughts” Textured Aspen Tree painting by Texas Artist Niki Gulley

“Reclining Thoughts” ©2020 Niki Gulley
40″ x 30” textured oil painting on wrap around canvas

In this painting, I wanted you to you to experience the joy of looking up into the treetops – just like you did when you were a kid. Lying on the ground, not a care in the world, you gaze in wonderment as the clouds drift by. Choosing warm yellows, reds and greens and utilizing thick chunky staccato strokes add to that childlike whimsy and I hope you are transported back to a happy, carefree time and place.

“Forest’s Edge” Palette Knife Painting by Niki Gulley

36″ x 60″ textured oil painting on canvas

I love being immersed in nature. After living in a city surrounded by concrete and noise, I find being surrounded by mother nature to be extremely cathartic, peaceful and rejuvenating. In Forest Edge, I wanted to capture those feelings of happiness and tranquility. Working first with thin drippy paint, and then building up thick layers of oil paint with palette knives to achieve extreme dimension, this painting is loaded with movement, energy and color. I hope it lifts your spirits and recharges your batteries while bringing texture, joy and the outdoors inside your home.

“Rhythm Reflections” Palette Knife Painting by Niki Gulley

36″ x 60″ textured oil painting on canvas

I love being immersed in nature. After living in a city surrounded by concrete and noise, I find being surrounded by mother nature to be extremely cathartic, peaceful and rejuvenating. In Rhythm Reflections, I became fascinated with the mirror reflection on the aspen trees in the water below the horizon line. With the lake surface slightly blurring the individual leaves, patterns started emerging that created a sort of rhythm that I found mesmerizing. Working first with thin drippy paint, and then building up thick layers of oil paint with palette knives to achieve extreme dimension, this painting is loaded with movement, energy and color. Leaving the composition slightly abstracted gives you a chance to form your own contemplative narrative with nature.

New “Syncopation II” Textured Aspen Painting by Niki Gulley

“Syncopation II” ©2020 Niki Gulley
 12″ x 24″ • textured oil painting on canvas

Flickering autumn leaves seem to almost dance in a gentle breeze while white sentinels slice through the colorful backdrop and create a rhythm as they march along. Repeating and receding, the aspen trunks lead you into the distance, inviting you to take a relaxing walk on a beautiful autumn morning.

Palette Knife Aspen Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

SOLD • 12″ x 24″ textured oil on canvas

Just Sold through the Statton Gallery! I loved this brilliant aspen forest with its bright white aspen trunks slicing through all of the vibrant red and yellow foliage, contrasted against the multitude of greens surrounding it. The patterns of the trees created a sort of rhythm and I focused on the placement of the ivory sentinels and strokes in the leaves to add to that feeling of a driving beat. I hope you, too, can feel the energy and joy of being surrounded by nature as autumn is in full swing.

“Autumn Memories” Palette Knife Aspen Painting by Niki Gulley

“Autumn Memories” ©2020 Niki Gulley
36″ x 36″ texture oil painting

I painted Autumn Memories to bring back the serenity I feel while walking through the woods on a cool autumn day, being totally immersed in nature, and not a care in the world. I chose pure, intense reds and yellows contrasted against autumn grasses and pops of purple to create a fall forest that vibrates with color, energy and sound. I hope you are transported with me to this cathartic aspen forest!

I’m excited to have been invited to exhibit at Studio Seven Arts in Pleasanton, CA. If you’d like to see or find out more details about Autumn Memories, please check them out:

New “Elevated Love” Aspen Tree Painting by Niki Gulley

“Elevated Love” ©2020 Niki Gulley

48″ x 36” textured oil painting on wrap around canvas
Recently I felt compelled to paint a new treetop painting where a couple has etched a heart into the aspen bark. With romance in the air and the excitement of young love, this painting is full of playful colors and energy to match those emotions.

New “Through the Keyhole” Palette Knife Oil Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

“Through the Keyhole” ©2019 Niki Gulley
20” x 16” textured oil painting

I love the twisting, textured limbs of old oak trees, and the way these two branches formed a keyhole view of the forest beyond was fascinating. Arching the branches upward suggests a touch of whimsey like climbing a tree when you’re a kid. Loaded with texture and surprising pops of color, I hope you, too, are transported to an enchanted place filled with hope and wonder.

New “If a tree Falls” Textured Oil Painting by Texas Artist Niki Gulley

“If a Tree Falls” ©2019 Niki Gulley
24″ x 18″ Textured oil painting

I always love going to Turtle Creek, the natural oasis the city has created in the middle of Dallas. This painting was inspired from a time when you could actually climb down the rocks and enjoy the beautiful stream from below, being completely isolated from city noise and housing. I was drawn to these large abstract sweeping patterns of the water and land meeting with just a trickle of light illuminating the foliage in the distance and one lone trunk that has fallen.
