“Reaching New Heights” Textured Aspen Painting by Niki Gulley

“Reaching New Heights” ©2021 Niki Gulley
48” x 36″ textured mixed media painting
on 1.5″ wrap around canvas with the painting continuing around the edges

In this painting, I wanted you to you to experience the joy of looking up into the treetops – just like you did when you were a kid. Lying on the ground, not a care in the world, you gaze in wonderment as the clouds drift by. Choosing warm yellows, reds and greens and utilizing thick chunky staccato strokes add to that childlike whimsy and I hope you are transported back to a happy, carefree time and place.

Niki Gulley Demonstrating at Marigold Arts Gallery in Santa Fe

“Sunburst” ©2021 Niki Gulley
30″ x 40″ textured mixed media painting
on 1.5″ wrap around canvas with the painting continuing around the edges

Inspired by the gorgeous aspen groves located in the Sangre de Cristo Mountain rising above Santa Fe, I wanted to capture this magical morning light casting its warm glow on the forest. Peaceful and mysterious, the sun’s rays peek through the knotted trunks causing the landscape to dance with light and awaken with autumn’s kaleidoscope of colors. Loaded with texture and layers and layers of paint, the forest shimmers with hope and discovery for the new day.

This Saturday I will  be demonstrating at my Santa Fe Gallery, Marigold Arts, from 10am – 2pm. If you are in the area, stop by, say hello and watch my process. I look forward to seeing you tomorrow!

New “Whispers in Time” Aspen Painting by Texas Artist Niki Gulley

“Whispers in Time” ©2021 Niki Gulley

30” x 30” textured oil painting

Colorado’s celebrated quaking aspen trees stand arrow straight in the valleys and
up and down the hills.
Slim white trunks sing out against the forest background and each leaf provides
a sparkling symphony of notes whispering through the mountains.
Flames of yellow leaves flicker against autumn’s burning reds
and the deep, cool blue mountain streaked with late light.

This painting captures the breathtaking colors of
Colorado in the fall, the Aspens at their most beautiful, and the peaceful rustling murmur and musical sigh of the fluttering leaves.

New Textured Aspen Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

“Walk About III”

10″ x 20″ textured mixed media painting on canvas
 by Niki Gulley

I was drawn to this meandering path leading through the aspens with its dappled light creating such gorgeous shadows and summer wildflowers brightening the journey. Having fun capturing all of the different textures with palette knife from the lush grasses to the leaves rustling in a gentle breeze to the peeling bark on the aspen trees, I set out to recreate the peace and beauty of this forest. I hope you, too, can feel the serenity of this rejuvenating place and enjoy an uplifting walk in the woods.

New “A Knot in the Woods II” Abstract Aspen Painting by Niki Gulley

“Knot in the Woods II” ©2021 Niki Gulley

20″ x 30″ textured mixed media painting
on 1.5″ wrap around canvas with the painting continuing around the edges

Scrolling bark peels back like white washed parchment revealing secrets in the deeply textured wood below. A painting of grace and beauty, its verticality is offset by diagonal glowing autumn colors. Each stroke defined by thick textured paint and rich colors contrasted against subtle ivories, strike a reverberating chord and create a visual vibration that resonates in an optical song.

Just sold through Studio Seven Arts Gallery! I painted Autumn Memories to bring back the serenity I feel while walking through the woods on a cool autumn day, being totally immersed in nature, and not a care in the world. Painting in the mountains, especially this year was so cathartic and emotional. It was such a joy to be there surrounded by these amazing fall colors, that it would bring me to tears every day. I felt so fortunate to be able to do this when so many people weren’t able to travel, that I poured my heart and soul into every painting. I hope that you can feel the joy that I felt when you see them.
