Day 3, Provence Art Trek: Aix-en-Provence
Plein Air Painting and Photography Workshop
with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams

Today we checked out of our hotel and headed to Provence’s cultural hub and Cezanne’s home, Aix-en-Provence. After visiting its famous Cours Mirabeau boulevard, lined with cafés and plane trees and its morning produce and flower market, we parted from the photographers and set up our easels at this picturesque fountain courtyard. Having several hours to paint, we thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful day and each painter’s unique view of the scene. Some focused on the fountain, others on the architecture and some on the nearby cafés. Everyone’s painting turned out great!

Next, we headed deep into the lavender country to our picturesque b and b, where we spent the rest of the trip. And, of course we completed the day with another delicious meal!

“Diagonal Patterns” Palette Knife Lavender Field Painting by Niki Gulley

“Diagonal Patterns,” Provence ©2018 Niki Gulley
SOLD • 9″ x 12″ textured oil painting

Just sold through the Good Art Company Gallery! I painted “Diagonal Patterns” on location in Provence during our Plein Air Painting and Photography Art Trek Workshop my husband and I led in France. The lavender fields were amazing, and stretched as far as the eye could see! I wanted to focus on these perfectly planted purple rows, contrasted against the vibrant yellow sunflowers in the distance. I loved how those colors popped next to each other! I chose to lower the horizon line so that I could include these amazing clouds drifting by in diagonal patterns that mimicked the lavender aisles.  That also gave the painting an idea of space so that you could sense the fragrant purple beauties stretching for miles. Painted with palette knife and thick oil paint, the final image is loaded with color, texture and movement!

“Sunny Horizon” Palette Knife Sunflower Painting at the Good Art Company

“Sunny Horizon” ©2019 Niki Gulley
30″ x 48″ textured oil painting on wrap around canvas

Inspired by a trip through the Midwest, I was filled with joy seeing this solid field of gold! At the same time, the clouds above were so voluminous and dramatic that I had to recreate the scene. The horizon stretches out before us as festive blossoms dance in the early evening glow. Leaving my strokes loose and free and working with palette knife to create volume and texture, all add to the energy of the painting. I hope you, too, can feel the peace and happiness of being surrounded by nature in all of its glory, staring into the clouds while soaking in the moment.

Day 5, Provence Art Trek with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams

“Abbey de Senanque,” Provence ©2015 Niki Gulley
SOLD • 5” x 7″ oil painting

Day 5, Provence Art Trek: the Luberon
Plein Air Painting and Photography Workshop
with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams

Just Sold! After a peaceful day in the countryside, we headed to the Luberon hill towns today. Starting our journey at the Abbey de Senanque, some of our group toured the twelfth century sanctuary’s interior, while others painted and photographed the lavender fields and grounds surrounding the abbey. Next we traveled to the red and gold colored town of Roussillon, known for its ochre cliffs. Filled with picturesque views, art galleries, restaurants and interesting shops, everyone enjoyed having some free time to wander before we took off for the Pont Julien bridge.

The Roman bridge, dating from 3 BC and constructed without mortar, is an architectural marvel that was still driven on until 2005! After surveying the bridge, we headed back to our b and b. Dinner that night was traditional Provencal fare, including fresh vegetables, fish, meats, and goat cheeses loaded with delicious sauces, garlic and butter. Yum!

Next summer we will be leading an Art Trek to Spain and the following year we will be headed to Tuscany, Scotland and Ireland, so if you’ve always dreamed of painting, photographing and sightseeing in Europe, please join us for one of these amazing trip! See details at ArtTreks.org.

Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley Receives “Best in Show”

©2018 Niki Gulley • textured oil paintings

I’m so excited and honored to have received “Best in Show” at Webster Groves Art Fair this summer! In my work I strive to capture the vibrant energy and intrinsic beauty of our natural surroundings so as to uplift one’s spirits and suggest childlike wonder. In order to achieve the desired mood for my work, I combine an impressionistic flair for painting with a sculptor-like technique by applying paint thickly using palette knives, thereby creating multi-dimensional images. The resulting style achieves a richness of depth that explodes with color, flows with light, and evokes an emotional response. By utilizing vivid hues and contrasting the play of light and shadow to create drama, my broad energetic strokes add to a sense of vitality and motion, bringing my landscapes to life.
