New “April’s Palette III” Bluebonnet Painting by Texas Artist Niki Gulley

“April’s Palette III,” Texas Hill Country ©2018 Niki Gulley
12″ x 18″ textured oil painting

Recently we loaded up the car and headed south to visit the Texas Hill Country to see the wildflowers in bloom. While not as prolific as some years, the thick patches we found did not disappoint. It’s so exciting to see a massive carpet of blue across our usually green hills, and I love how the bluebonnets signal that spring has arrived! Our last stop on our Texas adventure was stopping closer to home, near West Texas. The explosion of wildflowers was amazing with practically every color in the rainbow represented. This field was so beautiful that I had to stop and paint it! Even recreating the scene filled me with such joy and contentment. I hope you, too, can feel the elation and energy of springtime in Texas.

I painted these Texas Bluebonnets and wildflowers with extremely thick oil paint and palette knives to achieve depth and texture. The resulting image comes to life and is loaded with color and movement. In this wildflower series, I’ve framed the paintings in espresso with linen liners to focus your eye on the painting and not the frames. These Texas wildflowers look great hung alone or in a grouping with the rest of the “April’s Palette” series!

Recently we loaded up the car and headed south to visit the Texas Hill Country to see the wildflowers in bloom. While not as prolific as some years, the thick patches we found did not disappoint. It’s so exciting to see a massive carpet of blue across our usually green hills. I love how the bluebonnets signal that spring has arrived! For our first stop, I chose this colorful field north of Austin and set my easel up to capture its beauty. I was drawn to not only the vivid wildflowers, but also the gentle hills and this rocky ledge they were perched upon. With some fluffy clouds drifting overhead, it turned out to be a perfect day to paint! I hope you can feel the joy and energy of springtime in Texas.I painted these Texas Bluebonnets and wildflowers with extremely thick oil paint and palette knives to achieve depth and texture. New “Marching into Autumn” Palette Knife Painting by Niki Gulley

“Marching into Autumn” ©2018 Niki Gulley
10″ x 20″ textured oil on canvas

I painted this colorful autumn scene near my home when the fall foliage was first starting to appear. I loved the vibrant reds, oranges and yellows of the cypress contrasted against the multitude of greens surrounding it. The patterns of the shadows underneath the trees created a sort of rhythm and I played up the angles of the trees and strokes to add to that feeling of a driving beat. I hope you, too, can feel the energy and joy of being surrounded by nature as autumn approaches.

New Tuscany Palette Knife Painting by Niki Gulley

“Peaceful Pursuit,” Tuscany ©2018 Niki Gulley
30″ x 48” textured oil painting on gallery wrap canvas

This painting is inspired from a trip to Tuscany we took a few years ago when my husband, who is a professional photographer, and I spent about a week scouring every inch of the countryside for the best poppy fields and views. I was particularly drawn to this peaceful scene, even if the poppies weren’t as prolific as in other fields. I loved the calming, sweeping shapes of the hills and the vibrant reds contrasting against the softer grasses and white wildflowers. The road beckons you back to the stone farmhouse in the distance, while dramatic voluminous clouds dance across the sky, mimicking the foreground shapes and creating a sense of harmony. Repeating colors throughout, I love how the Impressionists used vibrant hues to add to the mood of a scene and create flow, so I brought my contemporary approach with broad strokes and thick texture to their traditions. I hope you, too, can feel a sense of peace and joy when you gaze into this Tuscan landscape.

New “Dreams Ahead” Palette Knife Aspen Tree Painting by Niki Gulley

“Dreams Ahead” ©2017 by Niki Gulley
 30″ x 40″ original textured oil painting

Enjoying the melodic tinkling of the aspen leaves rustling in the breeze, the trickling sounds of the babbling brook at our backs, and the beauty of fall ablaze with color, I felt invigorated as I began painting this aspen forest. The setting was so peaceful and rejuvenating that I wanted to communicate that joyful feeling of discovery. Filling the canvas with energetic staccato strokes and bold colors, in addition to gently arching the tree trunks reaching towards the sky, add to that uplifting feeling. And then just a sliver of the trail cutting through the forest, suggests the excitement of the journey that is to come.

New “Floating Expressions” Series Aspen Tree Paintings by Niki Gulley

“Floating Expressions III” ©2017 Niki Gulley
24″ x 24″ textured mixed media painting on wrap around canvas

In this painting series, I wanted the focus to be on texture. Usually I paint with a lot of color, but I opted to use a limited palette on these pieces to really concentrate on the peeling bark of the aspen trees. Bordering on the edge of abstraction and the cusp of realism, Floating Expressions is loaded with layers and layers of paint, built up with thin glazes and then palette knife to create extreme dimension. Choosing to come in extremely close on the subject, I played around with various strokes and paint thicknesses to add depth and energy. At the end, I had to throw in a few of my signature strokes of color – a splash of gold, some touches of purple, and just a dab of fire-engine red for added excitement and unexpected color twists.
