Cottonwood Art Festival this weekend

“Last Light,” Texas Hill Country ©2010 Niki Gulley
12″ x 24″ pastel
We drove down to the Texas Hill Country to see the bluebonnets, and the Willow City Loop did not disappoint! Thick masses of azure blue as far as the eye could see. I was particularly drawn to this scene late in the day when the sun was starting to set and creating interesting long lavender shadows across the gently rolling landscape.
I’ll have this pastel at my booth at the Cottonwood Art Festival, cottonwoodartfestival.com this weekend f you’d like to see it in person. Or, e-mail me at [email protected] for more information.

Poppy Fields Oil Painting at Southlake Art in the Square – this weekend

“What Dreams May Come” ©2010 Niki Gulley
Oil on canvas • 36” x 48”

In this painting I wanted to create a dream-like feel using one of my favorite flowers, the poppy, so I chose to paint this landscape at dusk as the sun is starting to set over the distant hills to add to that mood. I love the wildflower masses in the foreground creating waves of color, and the curving shapes adding to the sense of tranquility. I was mesmerized watching the cinematography in the movie “What Dreams May Come” and my painting reminded me a little of those magical graphics, so I decided to title my piece the same.

I’ll be displaying “What Dreams May Come” and several other new paintings at Southlake’s Art in the Square this weekend. I hope you can stop by and visit. For more information, see artinthesquare.com.

Ireland Oil Painting

“Ring of Kerry,” Ireland ©2010 Niki Gulley
12″ x 24″ oil painting
This painting is inspired from our trip to the UK a couple of years ago. Unfortunately it rained solid for 27 of our 30 days abroad – and that was their “dry” season! We finally got a moment of reprieve on our drive around the Ring of Kerry in Ireland, when we came across this beautiful vantage point. The rain eased up for a few minutes and we could enjoy this panoramic view of the bay. I loved the multi-colored hydrangeas in the foreground adding a punch of color to all of the greens and grays and the dramatic lighting created from the sun trying to break through the cloud cover.
I’ll be showing this piece at the Dutch Art Gallery in Dallas as part of the “Finding Her Voice” show, a tribute to women artists. Stop by the artists reception this Sunday or visit dutchartusa.com for more information. I’ll be there from 1 – 2 pm and would love to see you there.

Artscape – Dallas Arboretum

“Afternoon Stroll,” Dallas Arboretum ©2010 Niki Gulley
18″ x 24″ pastel

One of my favorite places in Dallas in the springtime is the Arboretum during their Dallas Blooms. I love the masses of colors that the tulips, azaleas and narcissus form, not to mention that the gardens signal that winter is over and spring is really here! This weekend I’ll be exhibiting at Artscape at the Dallas Arboretum, which falls in the middle of peak time during Dallas Blooms. Going on its 5th year, Artscape showcases 100 talented artists from around the country so stop on by for a beautiful weekend of art and flowers!

I wanted this painting to be real loose and fun, so that you could almost feel the breeze blowing across the wildflowers and making the rows of colors dance.

White Rock Sunset II

“White Rock Sunset II” ©2009 Niki Gulley oil painting • 7″ x 5″

Another beautiful sunset over White Rock Lake in Dallas. I feel very fortunate in an otherwise concrete city to have this lovely slice of nature practically out our backdoor. I think being out in nature helps rejuvenate our spirit from time to time – I know it does for me! I hope you can visit me at the Lakewood Market this weekend.
