“Butterfly on Elephant Ears” 25″x19″ pastel © Niki Gulley Vibrant yellows with a rainbow of colors in the background. What a treat to find this little guy taking a break on these elephant ears at the Dallas Arboretum. The black and orange of this monarch butterfly caught my eye but the curves of the ears lead me right to him.

Just sold! I absolutely love poppies and seeing them growing in mass! In this painting I wanted to show them in a different way than we’re used to seeing poppies so I chose a low angle to show off the beauty of their simplified forms and the strength of such a delicate flower, while capturing the azure blue sky behind them.
In Sunny Side Up, I wanted to paint something bright and happy that would always cause you to smile when you looked at it, and sunflowers are the perfect flower to do just that. Purposely choosing bright complimentary colors and using extremely thick oil paint, I feel the painting really leaps off the canvas and creates the feeling of joy I intended.
If you’d like to see this sunflower painting in person, visit my booth at “Artscape” held at the Dallas Arboretum next weekend (March 18-20.) See dallasarboretum.org/artscape/index.htm for more details.
