New “Visions of Wildflowers III” Bluebonnet Painting by Texas Artist Niki Gulley

“Visions of Wildflowers III” ©2019 Niki Gulley
36″ x 36″ textured oil painting on wrap around canvas

In this Texas wildflower series, I wanted to capture the excitement and energy felt during a beautiful April day when the bluebonnets are painting the horizon in blue. Driving through the hill country in springtime, there is such an amazing explosion of color from the bluebonnets, Indian Paintbrush, coreopsis, Evening Primrose and the plethora of wildflowers, that it fills your heart with joy and awe. Focusing on the rows of color, I wanted to communicate the emotion felt being surrounded by all of this Texas beauty.

New “Texas Trails” Bluebonnet Oil Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

“Texas Trails” ©2019 Niki Gulley
16″ x 20″ textured oil painting

I painted “Texas Trails” this spring while visiting Austin and the surrounding area. This might have been one of the best years for the bluebonnets and wildflowers. The explosion of color along roadsides was incredible! This morning started out slightly overcast, and the sun kept peeking in and out of the clouds, creating a soft glow to everything it touched. I wanted to capture that magical light illuminating your journey on this Texas walking trail lined by bluebonnets and Indian paintbrush. I hope you, too, can feel the excitement of springtime with the wildflowers abloom in the Texas Hill Country!

New “Tuscan Vista” Palette Knife Painting by Niki Gulley

“Tuscan Vista” ©2019 Niki Gulley
12″ x 16” textured oil painting

I painted “Tuscan Vista” from the villa we stay in when my husband and I are leading our Foodie Trek in Italy. The late afternoon light was so beautiful how it cast its golden glow on the landscape and stone farmhouses, and I had to capture it before it was gone. Uplifting poppies frame the foreground as the serpentine roads lead you up over the hills and into the distance. I hope you enjoy the escape to beautiful Tuscany, too, when you gaze at my painting!

New “Ruby Road” Palette Knife Poppy Painting by Niki Gulley

“Ruby Bouquet” ©2019 Niki Gulley
12″ x 16” textured oil painting

I absolutely love it when I come across a whole field of wildflowers – there is something about the transformation of a single dainty flower into a dense explosion of color that inspires awe and delights your senses. Inspired by our travels to Italy, cypress trees rise out of the vast open landscape signaling that you have arrived in Tuscany! Perched on a hilltop with its long curving driveway, this villa is set against the perfect backdrop for a romantic escape. Rows of ruby blooms draw your eye back to the rolling hills and beautiful billowing clouds. Painted with palette knife and thick oil paint, this canvas is loaded with movement, color and dimension.

New “Ready for Harvest” Tuscany painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

“Ready for Harvest,” Tuscany ©2019 Niki Gulley
9″ x 12″ textured mixed media

We visited Tuscany at the end of summer and were surrounded by grapevines everywhere we went. I loved the vibrant vines in the foreground framing the rolling hills dotted with more grapevines, olive trees, and plowed grain fields in the distance. I created this textured painting with palette knife and a lot of paint. I arranged the planted vines to lead your eye back to the Tuscan villa tucked into the distance. Morning light cast deep shadows on the ground and caused the leaves and soil to glow. As a treat when I finished, we enjoyed a picnic of salami, proscuitto, pecorino and of course, vino. Yum!

“Purple Majesty” ©2019 Niki Gulley
20″ x 30″ textured oil painting

The lavender fields in Provence are incredible – perfectly manicured rows and rows of an explosion of violet as far as the eye can see. Rippling purple columns draw your eye to the lone stone farmhouse in the distance. Meanwhile the sun starts setting through the clouds spanning across the sky in rhythmic waves, mirroring the lavender shapes below and creating a flowing harmony. Perspective lines converge, leading you to this joyful spot and I hope you can smell the amazing aromas and feel your spirits lifted while gazing into this scene!

New “Springtime at White Rock Lake” Bluebonnet Oil Painting by Niki Gulley

“Springtime at White Rock Lake” ©2019 Niki Gulley
SOLD • 14″ x 18″ textured oil painting

Just Sold! This might have been one of the best years for the bluebonnets and wildflowers in Texas, including Dallas where we don’t usually see many! The explosion of color along roadsides was incredible. I found this prolific patch of bluebonnets and Indian Paintbrush just down from my house at White Rock Lake, and I had to capture all of those beautiful blooms before they were gone. This morning started out slightly overcast, and the sun kept peeking in and out of the clouds, creating a soft glow to everything it touched. I wanted to capture that magical light illuminating the lake and accentuating the rows of wildflowers along the hill. It was such a peaceful spot that I wanted that emotion to come through, too. I hope you can feel the joy and tranquility of springtime with the wildflowers abloom in the Texas!
