“October Rhythms” Palette Knife Aspen Trees by Niki Gulley

“October Rhythms” ©2014 Niki Gulley
36″ x 48″ textured oil painting on gallery wrap canvas

I find being immersed in nature can have such an uplifting effect, and I wanted to share that feeling with you in October Rhythms. I chose pure, intense reds and yellows contrasted against autumn golds and chocolates to create an fall forest that vibrates with color, energy and sound. The repetition in the aspen trunks and foliage patterns, combined with the flickering tones of the breeze rustling the leaves reminded me of a symphony in the forest so I titled this painting October Rhythms.

If you’re in the Dallas area this coming weekend and you’d like to see October Rhythms and more of my palette knife paintings in person, please stop by my studio as part of the White Rock Artists’ Studio Tour.

New Colorado Aspen Tree Oil Painting by Niki Gulley

“Aspen Concerto” ©2014 Niki Gulley
24” x 18” textured oil painting
Colorado’s celebrated quaking aspen trees stand arrow straight in the valleys and
up and down the hills.
Slim white trunks sing out against the forest background and each leaf provides
a sparkling symphony of notes whispering through the mountains.
Flames of yellow leaves flicker against autumn’s burning reds
and the deep, cool blue mountain streaked with early banks of snow.
This painting captures the breathtaking colors of
Colorado in the fall, the Aspens at their most beautiful, the peaceful snow-banked mountain, the rustling murmur and musical sigh of the fluttering leaves.

“Autumn Gems” ©2012 Niki Gulley

36” x 60” textured oil painting on wrap around canvas

I wanted this painting to be about the power and energy in nature to invigorate your spirit, so I chose to use warm vivid colors and thick staccato strokes to add to that feeling. I placed the foliage in diagonal sweeping shapes to create a sense of movement, and so that you can feel the wind gently rustling the leaves and causing them to dance.

Just Sold – “Rushing Desires” textured oil painting

“Rushing Desires” ©2011 Niki Gulley
SOLD • 60” x 36” textured oil on canvas

Just Sold! Charging down its stone cut course, torrents of water rush through grey boulders past green and gold bracken. Headlong and unrestrained the waters crash downstream, while above they splash into the airy distance a glowing, hazy tiara of misty sunlight. Thick brushstrokes of radiant oils define the powerful landscape carrying your eye through a complex composition of dynamic diagonals cleaved with the vertical cascade, caressed with a delicate crossing of gold dusted branches. A painting of power and energy balanced by graceful strokes of beauty, I wanted “Rushing Desires” to be about texture, movement, mystery and the cathartic feeling in nature.

New Aspen Tree oil painting by Niki Gulley

“Ivory Refrain” ©2011 Niki Gulley
24” x 30” textured oil on canvas

Scrolling bark peels back like white washed parchment revealing secrets in the deeply textured wood below. A painting of grace and beauty, it’s verticality offset by embracing branches wound round as a sheltering arm. Each stroke is crisp, vivid, defined by thick textured oil, rich colors strike a reververberating chord – purple and the compliment of gold create a visual vibration that resonates in an optical song.

Top award winners exhibit in Frisco, TX

“Deep in the Woods” ©2010 Niki Gulley
oil on canvas • 36″ x 36″

I am absolutely crazy about aspen trees. I love their textured peeling bark, the sound of their tinkling leaves blowing in the breeze, the way the light illuminates their yellow leaves and makes them glow, and the repetition of the trunks packed so tightly together. The first time I saw them was on a trip with my family to Colorado and I fell in love with the beautiful scenery and peacefulness I found immersed in the forest and surrounded by mountains. I wanted to share my love of nature in “Deep in the Woods” so that you, too, could enjoy that calm and the beauty of the aspens.

“Deep in the Woods” and several of my other new paintings will be hanging at the Frisco Municipal Complex in Frisco, TX as part of a two man show featuring my paintings and Josh Trefehen’s photographs, in honor of us winning best in show and the top award at Frisco’s Art in the Square Festival in March. The exhibit will be on display through Oct. 1st at 6101 Frisco Square Blvd., Frisco, TX 75034. “Nostalgic Overlook” ©2009 Niki Gulley
10″ x 8″ oil painting

Inspired by a trip to Colorado, we timed it just right – the aspens had turned color and we were there for the first snowfall of the season at the same time. It was simply beautiful!

I’ll have this piece available at the Dutch Art Gallery reception this Thursday, Dec. 10th, from 5-8pm as part of the Texas Daily Painter’s show. I’ll also be demonstrating how I paint a landscape from conception to completion if you would like to stop by and watch. We’d love to see you there!
