“Evolving Seasons” Large Scale Quad Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

“Evolving Seasons” ©2021 by Niki Gulley

Four 48″ x 36″ textured oil painting to form a 48″ x 144″ quadriptych

I wanted to create a large horizontal quadriptych, or four piece painting, that would flow from one season to the next to show the beauty of the forest throughout the year. Working on such a large scale invites you to step right into the scene and take a walk through the woods, enjoying all of the peace and joy that nature has to offer.

Here you can see all four paintings in a row, flowing from spring to summer and fall to winter. Rather than show the same exact scene at four different times of year, I decided I would rather show one long forest evolving from one season to the next to create a better harmony across the canvases. From the ground gently undulating underneath, to the pine trees flowing from canvas to canvas, to the rhythm created from aspens and oaks repeating, to the foliage and pops of color emerging and drifting into the distance, all elements are designed to add to the flowing symphony in “Evolving Seasons.

Winter from the New “Evolving Seasons” Series by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

Working on such a large scale invites you to step right into the scene and take a walk through the woods, enjoying all of the peace and joy that nature has to offer.

In my final piece of this large quadriptych, winter has arrived. A blanket of fresh snow frosts the ground and trees above, creating a beautiful network of lace branches. A hint of the sun peeks through, illuminating the ground and causing the light to sparkle. In the corner a hint of fall ending is the last traces of color until spring returns. Now you can leave your footprints in the snow, enjoying the crisp air and quiet of the forest.

At last cooler days have arrived and fall is here! The glorious explosion of color is full of energy and excitement as a gentle breeze rustles the foliage and creates a beautiful symphony for your ears. Fallen leaves softly crunch underfoot as you go exploring and you get lost in the colorful tapestry that nature has to offer.

New Summer from the “Evolving Seasons” Series by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

“Evolving Seasons – Summer” ©2019 by Niki Gulley
48″ x 36″ textured oil painting
Part of a 48″ x 144″ quadriptych

I wanted to create a large horizontal quadriptych, or four piece painting, that would flow from one season to the next to show the beauty of the forest throughout the year. Working on such a large scale invites you to step right into the scene and take a walk through the woods, enjoying all of the peace and joy that nature has to offer.

Now in this second painting of summer, the leaves have completely filled out and the woods are loaded with dozens of shades of green in all of their glory. Yellow dandelions line the forest floor in a carpet of gold, signaling summer is in full bloom. Long days and shorter nights allow for more idle time to explore and get lost in the serenity of nature.

New “Evolving Seasons” Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

“Evolving Seasons – Spring” ©2019 by Niki Gulley
48″ x 36″ textured oil painting
Part of a 48″ x 144″ quadriptych

I wanted to create a large horizontal quadriptych, or four piece painting, that would flow from one season to the next to show the beauty of the forest throughout the year. Working on such a large scale invites you to step right into the scene and take a walk through the woods, enjoying all of the peace and joy that nature has to offer.

This first painting of spring is filled with color and energetic strokes suggesting the excitement as winter ends and nature starts to bud out. Spring wildflowers dance along the ground while flowering trees start to show their colors through the tangle of winter branches. Soft pinks, yellows, greens and whites vibrate with the warmth that is starting to fill the air.

“Autumn Serenade II” Palette Knife Aspen Tree Painting by Niki Gulley

“Autumn Serenade II” ©2018 by Niki Gulley
SOLD • 30″ x 40″ original textured oil painting

Just sold through the Good Art Company Gallery! Flickering autumn leaves seem to almost dance in a gentle breeze. I wanted this scene to be filled with movement and energy, so I incorporated a lot of diagonal and curving shapes in the design to suggest that feeling. Contrasting short staccato strokes against blended passages with my palette knives, also increase that sense of motion. I hope you, too, can feel the excitement of walking through the woods on a beautiful fall day, letting your cares slip away and your spirit being invigorated.

“Dreams Ahead” Palette Knife Aspen Tree Painting by Niki Gulley

“Dreams Ahead” ©2018 by Niki Gulley
 30″ x 40″ original textured oil painting

Enjoying the melodic tinkling of the aspen leaves rustling in the breeze, the trickling sounds of the babbling brook at our backs, and the beauty of fall ablaze with color, I felt invigorated as I began painting this aspen forest. The setting was so peaceful and rejuvenating that I wanted to communicate that joyful feeling of discovery. Filling the canvas with energetic staccato strokes and bold colors, in addition to gently arching the tree trunks reaching towards the sky, add to that uplifting feeling. And then just a sliver of the trail cutting through the forest, suggests the excitement of the journey that is to come.

“Fall Carnival” Palette Knife Aspen Tree Oil Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

Fall Carnival ©2018 Niki Gulley
SOLD • 30″ x 40″ textured oil painting on gallery wrap canvas

Just Sold! Painted with extremely thick oil paint and palette knives so that this canvas is loaded with texture and bursting with color, flickering autumn leaves seem to almost dance in a gentle breeze. I wanted this landscape to be filled with movement and vivacity, so I incorporated a lot of diagonal and curving shapes in the design to suggest that feeling. Contrasting short staccato strokes against blended passages with my palette knives, also increase that sense of motion. One zig zag passage of crimson foliage creates a focal point in the tangle of leaves and turnks while adding energy to the scene. I hope you, too, can feel the excitement of walking through the woods on a beautiful fall day, letting your cares slip away and your spirit being invigorated.

“X Marks the Spot” Fall Foliage Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

“X Marks the Spot” ©2018 by Niki Gulley
SOLD • 16″ x 20″ original textured oil painting

Just Sold! I painted this piece on location when the fall colors were starting to peak in all of their glory.  I was drawn to how the autumn leaves glowed when back lit by the sun and the water’s surface reflected brilliantly where the light raked across it. Off in the distance, two trees criss crossed almost like they were marking this spot for me to paint! There was a peacefulness created by the rhythmic sounds of the trickling water, and I hope you are transported to this place where all of your cares drift away.
