New Colorado Aspen Tree Oil Painting

“Notes a Flutter” ©2013 Niki Gulley
24” x 18” textured oil painting
Colorado’s celebrated quaking aspen trees stand arrow straight in the valleys and
up and down the hills.
Slim white trunks sing out against the forest background and each leaf provides
a sparkling symphony of notes whispering through the mountains.
Flames of yellow leaves flicker against autumn’s burning reds
and the deep, cool blue mountain streaked with early banks of snow.
This painting captures the breathtaking colors of
Colorado in the fall, the Aspens at their most beautiful, the peaceful snow-banked mountain, the rustling murmur and musical sigh of the fluttering leaves.

“Reclining Thoughts” New Textured Aspen oil painting

“Reclining Thoughts” ©2013 Niki Gulley
48″ x 36” textured oil painting on wrap around canvas

In this painting, I wanted you to you to experience the wonderment of looking up into the treetops – just like you did when you were a kid. Lying on the ground, not a care in the world, you gaze in wonderment as the clouds drift by. Choosing playful colors and thick chunky staccato strokes add to that childlike whimsy and I hope you are transported back to a happy, carefree time and place.

Textured Aspen Paintings series

“Seasonal Shifts, Autumn” ©2012 Niki Gulley
12″ x 12″ textured oil on canvas

I painted this aspen grove with extremely thick oil paint and palette knife. The resulting canvas is loaded with texture, color and energy! I’ve painted it on 1 and 1/2 inch deep stretcher bars, with the image continuing around the edges so that it can be hung as is frameless for a contemporary look. This image looks great hung alone to brighten up a little spot, or in a grouping with some of the other seasons I’ve painted to fill a larger space. Take a look at nikigulley.com/the-art/textured-oils/ to find complimentary companion pieces.

Adopt – a – Art Show for Niki Gulley and Scott Williams

“Meandering Way” ©2012 Niki Gulley

25″ x 19″ pastel

In “Meandering Way,” I wanted you to be transported to a beautiful autumn day, completely surrounded by nature. Hiking through the forest, hearing the leaves crunching under foot and the canopy rustling above, you can be totally carefree and lost in the peaceful moment. Making short energetic strokes with my pastels and including vivid warm colors add to that joyful feeling of being immersed in nature.

This pastel along with several others will be available at our “Adopt – a – Art” party on Dec. 7th and 8th. As some of you may know, we are planning to move to a larger studio space and while we would love to take all of our precious friends with us, we would rather not move everything and start with a clean studio space. Consequently, we are going to do something this year that we have never done before and may never do again, we are going to have an adoption weekend. There will be nominal fees associated with some of these to cover the care and feeding of them over the years and all of our little friends will be available for viewing, ready to go to new homes. We hope that you can make it!

“Colorful Transformation” ©2012 by Niki Gulley

textured oil painting • 36″ x 48″

With “Colorful Transformation,” I wanted to focus on brilliant color and simple shapes to see if I could communicate the excitement I feel when surrounded by nature. Using energetic diagonal strokes and thick, textured paint, I hope you get a sense of the motion in the leaves and the power of nature to invigorate your spirit. I just love how this piece captured that essence!

Time Passages oil painting of White Rock Lake by Niki Gulley

“Time Passages” ©2011 Niki Gulley
12” x 24” textured oil on wrap around canvas
Near to sunset at White Rock Lake.
Sparkling sunlight peeks through the trees in the late afternoon.
Two paths present themselves to you:
one is broad – straight forward, comfortable, quick, drawing you into the lowly darks;
another path curves and winds, less known, slower, meandering, toward the autumn brightness. Such is life. Which path is yours? It is a delightful dilemma,
a problem you will solve by making this one of a kind original oil painting your own.

This intriguing art of White Rock Lake and many other paintings by Niki Gulley
are available for purchase.

Oakbrook Fine Art Invitational – this weekend

“Sounds of Autumn” ©2010 Niki Gulley
Pastel • 14” x 11”

The Chicago Botanic Garden is always beautiful, but in this pastel I wanted to capture it on a perfect autumn day when the native grasses and fall foliage have turned their vibrant autumn colors. I like this view looking across the peaceful lake towards the carillon chiming in the distance, playing in time with the trickling sounds of the wind flickering the fall leaves.

If you’re in the Chicago area, stop by my booth at the Oakbrook Fine Art Invitational to see “Sounds of Autumn” and more of my recent paintings. oakbrookcenter.com

Stone Arch Art Festival – this weekend

“Natural Rhythms” ©2010 Niki Gulley
36″ x 48″ oil painting

I find being immersed in nature can have such an uplifting effect, and I wanted to share that feeling with you in Natural Rhythms so I chose pure, intense colors to create a vibrant autumn scene that just makes you feel happy and alive when you look at it. The repetition in the birch trunks and fallen leaves, combined with the flickering sounds of the breeze rustling the foliage reminded me of a symphony in the forest so I titled this painting Natural Rhythms.

If you’re in the Minneapolis area this weekend, visit my art booth at the Stone Arch Art Festival. See StoneArchFestival.com for details on the art show.
