Frisco Art Festival & New Aspen Tree oil painting / Canvas Prints

“Scarlet Emergence” ©2011 Niki Gulley
36″ x 60″ oil painting

I wanted this painting to be about the power and energy in nature to invigorate your spirit more so than an exact replica of the forest, so I chose to use warm vivid colors and thick staccato strokes to add to that feeling. I placed the foliage in diagonal sweeping shapes to create a sense of movement, so that you can feel the wind gently rustling the leaves and causing them to dance.

If you’d like to see this aspen painting in person, stop by my booth at “Art in the Square” in Frisco, Texas this weekend. See friscosquare.com/AITS for more details.

New Aspen Tree Oil Painting & Canvas Prints

“Vertical Aspirations” ©2011 Niki Gulley
oil on canvas • 48″ x 36″
In “Vertical Aspirations” I wanted you to feel that child-like wonder of staring up in into the treetops and the heavens above. Choosing vibrant, cheerful yellows contrasted against a crystal blue sky and arranging the aspens in a circular pattern heightened by thick, curving paint strokes, both add to that joyful, playful feeling of hope and discovery. If you’d like to see this aspen tree painting in person, stop by my booth at “Art in the Square” in Frisco, Texas next weekend (March 5-6). Snowfall Comes Early – Colorado oil painting

“Snowfall Comes Early” ©2011 Niki Gulley
Oil painting • 24” x 12”

On our drive from Durango to Aspen, Colorado, as we rounded the last switchback near the summit north of Durango, we were greeted by these brilliant orange aspen trees and awestruck by their rare, unusual coloring. With the sun shining intensely, the contrast between the vibrant tangerine foliage, the cobalt blue sky, and the pristine white snow was absolutely breathtaking.

Fountain Square Art Festival – Evanston, IL – this weekend

“Transitional Tones II” ©2010 Niki Gulley
12” x 12” oil painting

I created these birch trees with palette knife and extremely thick oil paint to achieve texture and suggest the energy found in nature. The image is painted around the sides of the 1.5 inch deep gallery wrap canvas so that it looks three-dimensional and can be hung as is without a frame for a contemporary look. These chunky birch paintings look great in pairs and threes.

See NikiGulley.com/?page_id=229 for companion paintings or visit my art booth at the Fountain Square Art Festival this weekend in Evanston, IL to see more of my textured palette knife paintings in person. For details on the show, go to chicagoevents.com/event.cfm?eid=123.
