A couple of weeks ago, we visited Santa Fe and I demonstrated my technique in oils at Marigold Arts Gallery. After the sweltering heat in Dallas, the weather felt wonderful in New Mexico and I thoroughly enjoyed meeting everyone! Here is my finished painting, “Three’s Company.” I hope you can feel the joy and wonder of staring up into the treetops just like you did when you were a kid.

Inspired by the gorgeous aspen groves located in the Sangre de Cristo Mountain rising above Santa Fe, I wanted to capture this magical morning light casting its warm glow on the forest. Peaceful and mysterious, the sun’s rays peek through the knotted trunks causing the landscape to dance with light and awaken with autumn’s kaleidoscope of colors. Loaded with texture and layers and layers of paint, the forest shimmers with hope and discovery for the new day.
 
This Saturday I will  be demonstrating at my Santa Fe Gallery, Marigold Arts, from 10am – 2pm. If you are in the area, stop by, say hello and watch my process. I look forward to seeing you tomorrow!

New “Heaven Sent” Uplifting Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

In this painting I wanted you to feel that child-like wonder of staring up in into the treetops and heavens above. Choosing uplifting autumn tones contrasted against a soft blue sky, gentle clouds drift by as the sun peeks through casting its magical light on everything it touches and lifting your spirits. Arranging the trees in a circular pattern gives you a sense of laying on the ground, surrounded by the forest and directs your eye to hope’s focal point. Utilizing thick, energetic paint strokes adds to that joyful, playful feeling of promise and discovery.

I was drawn to this meandering path leading through the aspens with its dappled light creating such gorgeous shadows and summer wildflowers brightening the journey. Having fun capturing all of the different textures with palette knife from the lush grasses to the leaves rustling in a gentle breeze to the peeling bark on the aspen trees, I set out to recreate the peace and beauty of this forest. I hope you, too, can feel the serenity of this rejuvenating place and enjoy an uplifting walk in the woods.

Capturing the excitement and energy I feel while being immersed in the nature, “Counting Time” is loaded with vibrant autumn colors, extremely thick textured paint, movement and spontaneity. Peeling, knotted aspen trees stretch deeper and deeper into the woods, counting time as their foliage dances in the breeze creating an uptempo rhythm and filling the forest with its gorgeous symphony.

Scrolling bark peels back like white washed parchment revealing secrets in the deeply textured wood below. A painting of grace and beauty, its verticality is offset by diagonal glowing autumn colors. Each stroke defined by thick textured paint and rich colors contrasted against subtle ivories, strike a reverberating chord and create a visual vibration that resonates in an optical song.

I chose pure, intense reds and yellows contrasted against autumn grasses and pops of purple to create a fall forest that vibrates with color, energy and sound. Using diagonal leading lines with the tree trunks and limbs, your eye gazes into the focal point where all of the elements come together. Meanwhile, utilizing thick, curving paint strokes adds to that joyful, playful feeling of hope and discovery.
