Day 7:  Ireland ART TREK
Afternoon location: Ross Castle, Killarney
Plein Air Painting and Photography Workshop with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams
 
On the last afternoon of our Ireland Art Trek, we visited Ross Castle. While the photographers explored the castle and grounds, the painters set up their easels to capture this majestic view of the castle and lake. Although we didn’t have enough time to finish, you can get idea of the overall scene and the fast moving clouds with a tiny patch of blue sky poking through. Afterwards, we enjoyed a peaceful boat tour of the lake and came back to our home base, to share our photos and paintings of our trip. What a great way to end a wonderful Art Trek with new friends!

I recently was commissioned to paint this colorful covered bridge from Vermont surrounded by the gorgeous fall foliage. Created with palette knife and thick oil paint, the final painting is filled with color, texture and energy. I hope you, too, are transported to this idyllic

New “Going to Class” from Oxford by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

Inspired from a visit to Oxford, England, I loved the feel and energy of the old college town. We stopped in our tracks one day as we were passing in front of this Ivy covered wall, almost engulfing the massive hand-carved wooden door. Golden light was raking across the scene, beckoning you to take a look and go inside. The fact that the bike was parked right there, made it the perfect photo opp and later in the studio, the perfect painting subject.

New “Walking in Sunshine” by Palette Knife Artist Niki Gulley

“Walking in Sunshine” was inspired by a trip to Provence, France. Our timing was perfect and the sunflowers were in full bloom. Their bright, smiling faces as big as dinner plates, the path leading you deep into the golden field to the quaint stone farmhouse in the distance, and the beautiful late summer day made for the ideal subject. The resulting painting is full of warmth, color and texture, and my hope is that when you gaze into it, this piece lifts your spirits and brightens up any spot in your home.

New “Golden Textures” from Tuscany by Palette Knife Artist Niki Gulley

On the last day of our Tuscany Foodie Trek, we explored nearby Pienza to enjoy its picturesque alleyways and amazing views of the valleys below. Having been home to Pope Pius II, the town is filled with interesting historical sites, great shopping, delicious lunch spots and plenty of interesting corners to paint. I chose this doorway since I loved the texture and color of the walls, the prolific potted ivy turning red in the fall sun, and the soft light raking across the scene. Welcome home!

New “Serpentine Drive” in Tuscany by Palette Knife Artist Niki Gulley

Before we taught our Tuscany Foodie Trek, my husband and I spent a few days exploring the Tuscan countryside, painting and photographing the iconic scenery. “Serpentine Drive” illustrates one of the fascinating places we stopped with its mile long cypress lined drive. It felt like the trees snaked back and forth to infinity! Setting up my easel in late afternoon, I was able to capture the dramatic light as the setting sun illuminated the tops of the rolling hills and created long, dramatic shadows. Between the repetition of the vertical arbors and the horizontally flowing hills, the scene created a rhythmic harmony that added to the joy and serenity of the moment.

During our Tuscany Foodie Trek, we visit the wine mecca of Montepulciano and tour a couple of wineries while sampling their delicious Rosso and Vino Nobile wines. Besides loving their red grapes, I also have fallen in love with the beautiful landscape around there. One night we stopped to capture the setting sun and the golden hour before sunset where everything the sun touches gets bathed in a gorgeous yellow orange glow, creating dramatic highlights and long shadows.

New “Autumn in Tuscany” Palette Knife Oil Painting by Niki Gulley

During our Tuscany Foodie Trek, we stay in the middle of the countryside at a villa surrounded by 360 degree views of the rolling hills and valleys and nearby hill towns. One of the best vantage points and probably my favorite town in Tuscany is Pienza. Perched on high, the city towers over everything around and seems to actually draw the passing clouds to its bell tower and church steeple. This was a particularly gorgeous morning with beautiful puffy white clouds drifting by that created dramatic shadows in the recesses and golden light as it hit the autumn fields.
