New “Flowing into Autumn” Palette Knife Painting by Niki Gulley
New “Forest’s Edge” Palette Knife Painting by Niki Gulley
New “Sun’s Bounty III” Palette Knife Oil Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley
Sun’s Bounty is inspired from the beautiful sunflower fields we visited in Provence, France. The flowers seemed to stretch forever and the color explosion was out of this world! Back in my studio, I worked from a combination of photos, on-site sketchesand memories. Painting the sunflowers full-sized in the foreground helps to bring them to life and hopefully transport you to this happy location. Including surprising pops of vivid reds and purples keeps your eye moving throughout the scene, seeing new things each time you look at it, and adds to the joyful feeling.

New “Evolving Seasons” Quadriptych Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley
I wanted to create a large horizontal quadriptych, or four piece painting, that would flow from one season to the next to show the beauty of the forest throughout the year. Working on such a large scale invites you to step right into the scene and take a walk through the woods, enjoying all of the peace and joy that nature has to offer.
Here you can see all four paintings in a row, flowing from spring to summer and fall to winter. Rather than show the same exact scene at four different times of year, I decided I would rather show one long forest evolving from one season to the next to create a better harmony across the canvases. From the ground gently undulating underneath, to the pine trees flowing from canvas to canvas, to the rhythm created from aspens and oaks repeating, to the foliage and pops of color emerging and drifting into the distance, all elements are designed to add to the flowing symphony in “Evolving Seasons.

In my final piece of this large quadriptych, winter has arrived. A blanket of fresh snow frosts the ground and trees above, creating a beautiful network of lace branches. A hint of the sun peeks through, illuminating the ground and causing the light to sparkle. In the corner a hint of fall ending is the last traces of color until spring returns. Now you can leave your footprints in the snow, enjoying the crisp air and quiet of the forest.

At last cooler days have arrived and fall is here! The glorious explosion of color is full of energy and excitement as a gentle breeze rustles the foliage and creates a beautiful symphony for your ears. Fallen leaves softly crunch underfoot as you go exploring and you get lost in the colorful tapestry that nature has to offer.

Now in this second painting of summer, the leaves have completely filled out and the woods are loaded with dozens of shades of green in all of their glory. Yellow dandelions line the forest floor in a carpet of gold, signaling summer is in full bloom. Long days and shorter nights allow for more idle time to explore and get lost in the serenity of nature.

This first painting of spring is filled with color and energetic strokes suggesting the excitement as winter ends and nature starts to bud out. Spring wildflowers dance along the ground while flowering trees start to show their colors through the tangle of winter branches. Soft pinks, yellows, greens and whites vibrate with the warmth that is starting to fill the air.
