Just sold at my opening at American Fine Art this weekend, I created this series of sunflowers and poppies with palette knife and extremely thick oil paint, so that the resulting images are full of color, texture, energy and movement.

I absolutely love it when I come across a whole field of wildflowers – there is something about the transformation of a single dainty flower into a dense explosion of color that inspires awe and delights your senses. So in Poppy Passion, I combined memories of places I’ve been with intense saturated colors to convey that joy I feel when I come across a gorgeous field of poppies.

Blazing Transitions II – New birch painting

I used to love it as a kid when my parents would take me to the forest preserves near our home outside of Chicago. We would spend the whole day bike riding, picnicking and being immersed in nature and I relished this time with my family. In Blazing Transitions II I wanted to recreate those warm memories, choosing reds and yellows of autumn to heighten those happy feelings and using energetic strokes with my paint reminiscent of a carefree, simpler time.

In this painting I wanted you to feel that child-like wonder of staring up in into the treetops and the heavens above. I chose vibrant, cheerful yellows contrasted against a violet blue sky filled with big, puffy clouds. And, by arranging the aspens in a circular pattern heightened by thick, curving paint strokes, that joyful, playful feeling of hope and discovery are enhanced.

Niki Gulley featured at American Fine Art – this Saturday

With “Seasons of Change,” I wanted to focus on brilliant color and simple shapes to see if I could communicate the excitement I feel when surrounded by nature. Using energetic diagonal strokes and thick, textured paint, I hope you get a sense of the motion in the leaves and the power of nature to invigorate your spirit. I just love how this piece captured that essence!

Gulley will be the featured artist this month, and on April 21st the gallery will host a reception with the artist as part of Dallas’ Spring Gallery Walk. I wanted you to feel the joy and peacefulness of walking through the forest ablaze with color on a beautiful autumn day. With soft light illuminating the walkway and the distance sparkling in golden light, the only sounds to be heard are the crunching of fallen leaves underfoot and a slight breeze flickering the leaves overhead. What lies ahead? The mysterious glow from beyond beckons you forward.

JUST SOLD! I wanted this painting to be about the power and energy in nature to invigorate your spirit, so I chose to use warm vivid colors and thick staccato strokes to add to that feeling. I placed the foliage in diagonal sweeping shapes to create a sense of movement, and so that you can feel the wind gently rustling the leaves and causing them to dance.

New Impressionistic Bluebonnet Painting

A gorgeous spring day in Texas, with the bluebonnets, Indian Paintbrush and Texas wildflowers in full bloom, and just a few white fluffy clouds in the sky. This Texas hill country scene is painted with extremely thick oil paint and palette knives so that in person, the canvas is loaded with texture, color and movement to create a contemporary impressionistic twist on the traditional Texas wildflower painting!

Niki Gulley at Art City Austin this weekend

I painted these Texas bluebonnets and with extremely thick oil paint and palette knives to achieve extreme texture. The resulting image comes to life and is loaded with color and energy. In this wildflower series, I’ve painted the scene around the edges of the canvas on 1 and 1/2″ deep stretcher bars so that the paintings can be hung without a frame for a unique sculptural effect.
