Textured Colorful Snow Scene by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

“Evolving Seasons – Winter” ©2024 by Niki Gulley
48″ x 36″ textured oil painting

I wanted to create a large horizontal quadriptych, or four piece painting, that would flow from one season to the next to show the beauty of the forest throughout the year. Working on such a large scale invites you to step right into the scene and take a walk through the woods, enjoying all of the peace and joy that nature has to offer.

Here you can see all four paintings in a row, flowing from spring to summer and fall to winter. Rather than show the same exact scene at four different times of year, I decided I would rather show one long forest evolving from one season to the next to create a better harmony across the canvases. From the ground gently undulating underneath, to the pine trees flowing from canvas to canvas, to the rhythm created from aspens and oaks repeating, to the foliage and pops of color emerging and drifting into the distance, all elements are designed to add to the flowing symphony in “Evolving Seasons.

pastel on board 30” x 26” framed size

Framed as shown in silver wood with off white mat (minor flaws in the silver frame)

I love the way the petals fell on these bearded irises, showing various shades of purple exposing their golden plumes.  Mist from the sprinklers causes the background colors to swirl and dance, creating a beautiful harmony in this scene.

“Daffodils” Contemporary Impressionistic Floral Pastel by Niki Gulley

“Daffodils” ©Niki Gulley
18″ x 24” pastel on paper

Daffodils are symbols of spring and in many cultures their blooms kick off the start of many festivals. For me they just seem to make me happy. The petals appear to dance in the breeze with the colors inviting you in for a closer look. Their beauty is fleeting though, so I had to capture them quick before they faded out until next year.

Contemporary Floral Triptych Painting by Texas Artist Niki Gulley

 “Chromatic Transitons” ©2023 Niki Gulley

Three 36” x  18” mixed media paintings on canvas to form a 36″ x 54″ triptych

Spreading their joy across the landscape, I wanted to capture the rhythm, color, and density of beautiful, uplifting wildflowers in bloom. Starting with the first signs of spring when prolific bluebonnets carpet the hills, moving into May as vibrant poppies cast their merriment and energy, and finally transitioning into mid-summer when the amazing aromas of lavender fill the air. Dreamy light illuminates the sky and dances across the blanketed fields to bring nature’s glory, hope and serenity to your home.

“Kinetic Blues” Highly Textured Bluebonnet Painting by Niki Gulley

“Kinetic Blues” ©2023 Niki Gulley

36″ x 36″ textured mixed media on 1.5″ gallery wrap canvas with the painting continuing around the edges

With such depressing news these days, I felt compelled to paint something that would make us feel much better. And, it worked on me, so I hope it does the same for you. I felt so much happier after painting this larger than life bluebonnet and Indian Paintbrush scene. Working with palette knife and a lot of texture, reveling in the process of flinging and pouring paint to create a joyful, kinetic kaleidoscope, and playing with a cheerful palette of reds, yellows and blues, I feel like this one really lifts one’s spirits and has a touch of whimsy to it.

New “Rosy Surprise II” Palette Knife Painting by Impressionist Niki Gulley

“Rosy Surprise II” ©2024 Niki Gulley
24″ x 24″ Textured Acrylic on Canvas

What a beautiful surprise to have these roses blooming in my garden this winter! Of course the next night it was supposed to freeze and I couldn’t let these beauties go to waste. After cutting and assembling them in a vase, I just kept staring at them as they were bringing so much color and joy to the grey day. Despite several projects on my plate, I had to take a break and capture these rosy fleeting blooms. May they bring some vibrancy to your winter days, too.
