“Admiring the View” Large Panorama Landscape Painting by Niki Gulley

“Admiring the View” ©2023 Niki Gulley
20″ x 60″ textured mixed media painting on 1.5″ wrap around canvas with the painting continuing around the edges

Conjured up from a combination of my imagination and memories of inspiring drives through vibrant wildflower fields, I wanted to create a fantasy landscape filled with the joy and energy of springtime. Colorful foliage embraces your journey, while dancing blooms blanket the ground under your feet. Mysterious light beckons you onward to discover what is beyond the next bend. Stop for a moment and take in the view or continue your venture and wander into the unknown.

“Rhythm Reflections” Palette Knife Painting by Niki Gulley

“Rhythm Reflections” ©2023 Niki Gulley
36″ x 60″ textured oil painting on canvas

I love being immersed in nature. After living in a city surrounded by concrete and noise, I find being surrounded by mother nature to be extremely cathartic, peaceful and rejuvenating. In Rhythm Reflections, I became fascinated with the mirror reflection on the aspen trees in the water below the horizon line. With the lake surface slightly blurring the individual leaves, patterns started emerging that created a sort of rhythm that I found mesmerizing. Working first with thin drippy paint, and then building up thick layers of oil paint with palette knives to achieve extreme dimension, this painting is loaded with movement, energy and color. Leaving the composition slightly abstracted gives you a chance to form your own contemplative narrative with nature.

“Arboreal Labyrinth” Abstract Aspen Tree Painting by Niki Gulley

“Arboreal Labyrinth” ©2022 Niki Gulley
24″ x 44″ Textured Mixed Media Painting on 1.5″ wrap around canvas with the painting continuing around the edges

This Arboreal Labyrinth series was such a joy to paint! My goal was to capture the excitement and energy I feel while being immersed in the forest. Relishing in the gorgeous fall colors, enjoying the cool breeze as it kisses my cheek and creates a beautiful symphony blowing through the autumn leaves, and admiring the texture of peeling, knotted aspen trees, I stroll through the woods and forget about anything else but being surrounded by mother nature’s beauty.

Abstract Birch and Aspen Tree Paintings by Niki Gulley

“Floating Expressions II” ©2022 Niki Gulley
SOLD • 24″ x 24″ textured mixed media painting on wrap around canvas, framed in a silver floater frame

Just Sold! In this painting series, I wanted the focus to be on texture. Usually I paint with a lot of color, but I opted to use a limited palette on these pieces to really concentrate on the peeling bark of the aspen trees. Bordering on the edge of abstraction and the cusp of realism, Floating Expressions is loaded with layers and layers of paint, built up with thin glazes and then palette knife to create extreme dimension. Choosing to come in extremely close on the subject, I played around with various strokes and paint thicknesses to add depth and energy. At the end, I had to throw in a few of my signature strokes of color – a splash of gold, some touches of purple, and just a dab of fire-engine red for added excitement and unexpected color twists.
